I had a feeling Dakota was being an ass andtrying to get Wade wound up.

“Don’t worry about that. I had fun chattingwith those old lechers. I mostly wanted the membership to be able to find morefriends in the lifestyle.” The fact that it was the truth made talking easier.“I knew a few guys at the firehouse that were at least interesting enough thatI didn’t have to watch what I said too closely, but now I just don’t see themas much.”

He continued wandering around the room, glancing at me occasionally as he meandered. I knew there was something on hismind; I’d seen him do it a few times when Matthew had asked him a question he’dneeded to think about.

Finally he came to some kind of decisionand stopped on the other side of the kitchen. As he started back around theisland, there was something curious on his face. I couldn’t quite place it, butI could see there was a lot on his mind.

“But are you interested in finding asubmissive at the club? Don’t you want to date and get to know someone? Thereare a lot of sweet omegas there. Austin said it’s like a buffet of sexy men.”Wade’s lips quirked and he shrugged. “I’m not sure I’d put it like that, but thereare a lot of omegas and betas to choose from.”

I coughed and tried to find a goodresponse. “Now you’re the one who’s making it sound like a dirty buffet. Idon’t need to choose from anyone. I’m happy with my life.”

Mostly.

He nodded, still slowly moving closer. “Ican see how happy you are with your new career and your new family. That wasone of the first things I realized when you started talking about it. But beinghappy doesn’t mean you’re not looking to fall in love.”

I had the unreasonable feeling I was beinghunted…but that was ridiculous, wasn’t it?

“It was a lot of hard work in thebeginning, but it feels right. I always loved the department, but this is justas much me as that was.” It was a good answer, but the way he smiled and shookhis head said he knew I was talking around the subject.

“If you’re going to avoid talking aboutsomething, you need better lessons. I’ve got some feisty omegas I can farm outfor a few hours to give you some lessons.” He paused when he was a handful offeet away.

Leaning against the counter, he smiled.“Why aren’t you seeing anyone? You’re a genuinely nice guy, you’re strong andsweet and would probably be a wonderful Dom…but why are you single? I have toassume the boys have offered to set you up. Like attracts like and allthat…they have to know other subs.”

I nodded slowly, trying to find my braincells, but they seemed to have escaped.

“Yeah, but I made sure they understood Ididn’t need anyone in my life right now. And all their friends are young too.I’m just not attracted to younger omegas.” I could appreciate their looks andthe flirting, but they weren’t who I could picture settling down with.

“I’ve dated here and there, but it’s neverworked out.” How could it?

They weren’t the submissive, sweet, teasingomega I’d always imaged being with. They’d been polite, cool go-getters whowanted careers first. I’d given up asking omegas what they thought of stayinghome and taking care of a family. It’d just offended too many people.

“What kind of omega are you attracted to?”Somehow he’d inched forward, shifting to start closing the gap between us. “I’mjust trying to piece together a few things the guys said versus what I thoughtI knew.”

Oh.

The hunted feeling made me take a breathand then take stock of what I thought was going on. No matter what I’d assumedabout Wade recently, the omega in front of me was pushing at the Dom in frontof him to see what would happen.

Did he realize that?

The oblivious man I’d held at the clubwouldn’t have approached me like this…but he would’ve done this to Matthew.

I knew he wasn’t seeing his husband…but washe really seeing me when he studied me?

“Do you really want me to answer thatquestion?” I waited before pushing again. “I stepped back because you neededtime apart from everything that reminded you of Matthew, but I don’t want toruin our friendship when we’ve just started talking again.”

I expected him to flinch or reactnegatively when I mentioned Matthew. I needed him to really think about what hewas doing. Instead, I got a tender smile and he deliberately inched closer.

“Do you remember bringing up the campingtrip the other day?” When I nodded, he continued. “The real reason I was soridiculously embarrassed after that ride was because all afternoon Matthew keptwhispering all the dirty things he would’ve loved to have seen you do to me.”

What?

The way my heart started beating faster wasthe only reason I knew it was still working and I hadn’t dropped dead.Swallowing, I tried to find a reasonable response that wouldn’t make me looklike a moron. “I never guessed.”

Wade gave a wicked smile. “He’d alwaystalked about finding a third for us. We played a little testing out the idea, but we never found anyone that felt right who seemed to be into the lifestyleas well. But he loved to tease me about you, so you see, he wouldn’t be upset. He always liked you.”

I was back to staring at him stupidly, butthat wasn’t helpful or what I needed to be doing. I was going to fuck things upby making him question what he was saying if I wasn’t careful.

“I wish I’d been more open with him.” Itwas my turn to step forward and close the final distance between us.
