“You bet your sweet ass I’m gay.Andyou’re a jackass!” Greggory turned and faced me. “You okay, chica?”

“I am. Thanks,” I smiled slightly. Greggory faced Gerald again.

“Kaylee is a good girl. She would never do anything to hurt you. How stupid are you to not notice this beautiful girl is in love with you?”

I couldn’t clap my hand over Greggory’s mouth fast enough. Something had told me he was about to spill the beans so I had reached for his mouth. The whole scene played out in slow motion.

The moment Greggory’s words left his mouth, Gerald looked like he had seen a damn ghost. His face paled and he stared at me with wide eyes.

“Kaylee,” Gerald whispered, “is that true?”

“No. It’s not. I’m just a future baby carrier for you. Why would I be in love with you?” I sobbed.

“Kaylee,” he took a step towards me and I took a step back, shaking my head.

“Let’s not do this. I’m already crying in front of the whole damn world. I don’t need you yelling at me for having feelings towards you. I got it. I’m nobody. Just a pumpkin bumpkin with a sorry ass life story and no one to give a damn about me!”

I took off running towards the front of school.

“Kaylee! Kaylee, stop running!” Gerald shouted behind me. By the sound of his voice, I could tell he was catching up. I was out of breath. The world around me was beginning to spin and I felt like throwing up. There was no way I could outrun him, but that didn’t stop me from trying.

I ran as though my life depended on it, weaving between other students.

“Oh, no,” I said coming to a complete stop, clapping my hand over my mouth and bending over. My body felt weird. It was an unexplainable feeling.

“Kaylee, what’s wrong,” Gerald asked in a panic tone, running up to me from behind. “Kaylee, what’s wrong?”

He stood in front of me. He looked scared.

“Kaylee, talk to me. Tell me what’s wrong. What can I do for you? I’ll do anything. Please, just tell me what to do,” he pleaded. I took my hand away from my mouth.

“I don’t feel so good, Gerald,” I stood up tall and instantly regretted it. “Gerald,” I whimpered as my body became heavy, my vision blurred, and I fell forward into Gerald’s arms. His face was the last thing I saw before the world went dark.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The sound of a steady beeping, pulled me from my dreams.

“Kaylee?” Gerald said. He was somewhere nearby. Slowly, I opened my eyes. Light hit me like a spotlight, causing me to close my eyes once more.

“Gerald?” I asked hoarsely.

Someone took hold of my hand.

“I’m here,” he said. My hand was squeezed gently. “I’m right here.”

“What happened?” I turned my head in the direction of his voice and opened my eyes.

He was sitting in a chair next to the bed-- a hospital bed.

What the hell happened?

I looked around the room. It was a large hospital room with only one bed in the room, which I occupied. There was a recliner in the corner with my school bag and purse on it.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

My eyes looked around the room until I found the culprit making the continuous annoying beeping sound. Within arm’s reach from me was a machine that was monitoring my heart rate. So the annoying beeping was the sound of me being alive.
