“You’re in the hospital. You passed out and I freaked out,” Gerald chuckled faintly. “I wasn’t sure what to do so I rushed you to the hospital.”
“I’m sorry,” I sighed. “I didn’t mean to cause you any problems.”
“Don’t say that.” Gerald shook his head and kissed my hand. “I’ve never been so scared in my life. I’m just glad you’re okay.”
He was worried about me? I found it shocking considering he had been so pissed off at me. When he saw Greggory and me Gerald had flipped his lid. So why would he bother taking me to the hospital and staying with me?
I looked at Gerald with hope in my heart.
“You were worried about me?” I asked sheepishly. He smiled and nodded.
“Of course,” he smiled. “We have an agreement. You can’t get out of it that easy,” he teased.
I yanked my hand from him.
“Fuck off,” I snapped. “You can leave now.”
“Kaylee,” he reached for my hand but I moved it away from him. “I was just joking.”
“Right,” I scoffed. “Who cares about me as a person as long as you get what we agreed to on paper. Right?”
“Kaylee,” Gerald said in a warning tone.
“I’m not fucking apologizing!”
Someone cleared their throat. Gerald and I both looked in the direction. Staring in the doorway was an older man with a receding hairline wearing a white medical coat.
“Sorry to interrupt. I’m Doctor Carsen. Would you like me to come back in a few minutes?” the man asked.
“No. He was just leaving!” I pointed at the door.
“I’m not leaving,” Gerald said, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
“Are you her husband, sir?” Doctor Carsen stepped into the room and shut the door behind him.
“No. He’s not. Thus why he’s leaving,” I replied sweetly to the doctor while I glared at Gerald.
“You’re my responsibility. End of story,” Gerald glared at me.
“I amnotyour fucking responsibility!” I screamed back. The beeping sound sped up.
“Miss Brittain, please, calm down,” Doctor Carsen stated, walking over to me. “I need you to breathe. You can’t get worked up like this. It’s not good for you or the baby.”
Doctor Carsen’s words had Gerald and me turning in his direction.
“Baby?” Gerald and I shouted in unison.
“Oh,” Doctor Carsen’s eyes widened. “Well, this is awkward.” Doctor Carsen rubbed the back of his neck.
“Did you just say baby?” I whispered. My words were so faint I barely heard them.
“Yes, Miss Brittain. You’re pregnant. Congratulations,” Doctor Carsen smiled.
“Is that why she passed out?” Gerald asked.
“I’m assuming you haven’t been eating much, Miss Brittain.” I wasn’t sure if Doctor Carsen was asking or telling me.
“You’ve been starving yourself?” Gerald growled. I turned my head in his direction.
