Placing the letter back on the counter, I stood there for a moment in shock. It wasn’t long, though, before the tears started to fall. My body started to shake again with fear, and I could feel my legs become weak. Luckily, I managed to sit down on the chair next to me before my legs gave way under me. I picked up my phone and managed to dial the number for Jayden’s personal line at the office, which Sienna had insisted I put into my phone. At this moment, I was so glad she did.
“Hi, Abigail. To what do I owe this pleasure?”
I couldn’t say a word as I sobbed down the phone.
“Abigail, what’s happened? Are you okay? Where are you?”
Managing to calm myself slightly, I took in the barrage of questions that had been fired at me and spoke.
“Jayden, I’m sorry to call you, but I think I need your help. I’m at home and just had a letter delivered, but it was for Lila and not Abigail. I’m scared, Jayden. I don’t know what to do.”
I was rambling and speaking so fast, trying to get out all the information I needed to tell Jayden. I wasn’t sure if he would understand a word of it with the speed I spoke. I could hear the concern in Jayden’s voice as he answered me, and thankfully, he had understood the situation I was in.
“Okay, Abigail, just try to calm yourself down. I’m going to send Kelsey over to get you. I think at the moment you would feel safer with another woman. Sienna said you had been getting notes. Bring them all with you, and anything else you’ve received. We can sit and talk and get something in place to keep you safe. I am going to give Kelsey your number so she can call you when she is outside.”
“What if he is watching? I don’t want anything to happen to Kelsey. She has been through so much.”
“Believe me, Kelsey can look after herself. But if it makes you feel better, I’m sure I can send Nathan in a separate car just to make sure you aren’t followed. How is that?”
“That’s fine. Thank you, Jayden. I’m sorry if I’m dragging you and your staff away from something important.”
“Nothing is more important than you at the moment. I will see you in a little while. Kelsey should only be about fifteen minutes getting to you. Call me if you see or hear anyone.”
I hung up the phone and took deep breaths to try to calm my breathing and erratic heartrate. I got up from the chair where I was sitting and grabbed all of the notes that had been sent to me, along with the box I received earlier today. I wasn’t sure how long that had taken me, but the next thing I knew, my phone was ringing. Tentatively, I answered the unknown number.
“Abigail? It’s Kelsey. I’m just knocking on your front door now.”
Within seconds, I heard the knock, and I walked over to the door. When I checked through the peephole, relief washed through me as I saw Kelsey standing there alone. I opened the door and was immediately engulfed in the biggest hug. I just burst into tears in her arms as she held me. She stood there with me for a moment, just allowing me to cry, before she pulled away and spoke.
“Come on. Let’s get you back to King’s. I don’t want you staying here alone any longer than you need to. Nathan is in Jayden’s truck, so you will see that following us. Don’t be worried. He will stop anything from happening.”
I grabbed my bag and the box containing all the notes, and I headed out of my apartment with Kelsey and towards King’s. Little did I know how much this decision would change my life forever.
