Page 9 of Abigail's King
Chapter Four
Jayden
Iwas sitting in my office when the hysterical call came in from Abigail. I was almost ready to rush out of the office and get her myself but thought better of it. Knowing the state she was in, I thought it would be far better to send Kelsey to get her and have Nathan follow in my truck. I had managed to calm her down enough to find out exactly what had happened, and I called Kelsey into my office. She walked in just as I was finishing my call.
“Nothing is more important than you at the moment. I will see you in a little while. Kelsey should only be about fifteen minutes getting to you. Call me if you see or hear anyone.”
I hung up the call and I turned to Kelsey and Nathan, who had also come in.
“Kelsey, I need you to go and pick up Abigail and bring her into the office. She is in a bit of a state, so you might have tears when you arrive. If I give you her number, could you call her just before you knock on the door so she knows it’s you? Nathan, I want you to take my truck and follow Kelsey there and back. Be vigilant. Abigail has a self-proclaimed secret admirer who is turning into more of a stalker. She has had a note delivered to her private address with her model name on it, so I am worried she is being followed.”
“Give me the address and I will leave right away.”
I passed Kelsey the address, and she and Nathan headed out of my office. Nathan would text me when they were on their way back, I was sure of it. All I had to do now was let Sienna know. She had already mentioned something to me after her hen party, but as we hadn’t heard any more, we assumed all was quiet. It obviously wasn’t. I sent a quick message to Sienna to let her know Abigail was on her way into the office. I hadn’t even put the phone back down on the desk before it started to ring.
“Jayden King, you better make sure you look after Abigail. I don’t want some stranger looking after her. It needs to be someone you would trust with your life. With my life.”
I knew exactly who she was talking about, and in fairness, it was the first person I thought of as well. Especially after I had realised that the woman he had been checking out throughout my wedding reception was Abigail. It had to be Kye. He was the only senior member of the team that was one, free, and two, didn’t have someone to go home to at the end of the day. Well, except for Richard, and personal protection wasn’t really his specialty. But I thought I would play along with Sienna for a bit.
“And who do you suggest I put in charge of her security detail? Richard?”
“You know darn well who you should get to look after Abigail, and it isn’t Richard. Kye should do it. He would do anything to save a woman, including taking a bullet for them, as you well know. Plus, the fact that they are both single…well you know what can happen, don’t you, Jay?”
And here comes the matchmaking wife of mine.
She had already tried to pair up Amanda and Kye once. I knew that was a recipe for disaster. But Abigail and Kye might just work. Especially if they had to spend so much time together.
“Sienna, I had already decided that Kye should be the one to look after Abigail, but not for the reasons you have said. Because he is a senior member of the team and known to us all. Yes, I trust him with my life, yours, and every other member of the team. But I am not here to play matchmaker. Now if I can get on and do my job, Abigail will be here soon.”
“Thank you, Jay. It will make me feel a lot better knowing Kye is protecting Abigail. I love you.”
“I love you too, Angel.”
With that, I hung up the phone and waited for Abigail to arrive with Kelsey. As I was waiting, I thought about what Sienna had said. It was true that the longer you spent with someone in that situation, the more your feelings grew for them. I did know that for a fact.
Kye, however…there was something about him. I knew Mason knew more than he let on, along with Nathan and Kelsey, after the amount of time they had spent together. But no one else knew anything about him before Sienna’s kidnapping. Hell, I didn’t even know his last name. I knew Mason did – he had to, as it was required when we’d employed him – but to the rest of the team, it was a mystery. He was just always introduced as Kye. Even though I knew he was perfect for the job, and perfect for Abigail, I just hoped I wasn’t about to make one of the biggest mistakes of my career at King’s.
It wasn’t long before there was a knock at the door, and Kelsey walked in with a clearly distraught Abigail. My immediate reaction was to go over and comfort her. As I held her in my arms, I could feel her sobbing.
“Abigail, you need to try to calm down. Come and sit over here and we can talk. Would you like Kelsey to get you a drink? Or I can offer you a bourbon if you’d like something stronger?”
“A bourbon would be great, thank you.”
“I’ll get it.” Kelsey walked over to my cabinet to fix Abigail a drink, bringing some water with it as well. “I wasn’t sure if you had it straight or not, so I brought some water as well, or I can get you something from the fridge if you would like anything else.”
“No, that’s fine. Thank you, Kelsey.”
“Would you like me to stay? I’m not saying you don’t trust Jayden, but I do know what it’s like to feel like you are at the moment.”
“Thank you, but I’m sure I will be okay. Thank you again.”
I turned to Kelsey. “Thanks, Kels.”
I watched as Kelsey walked out of the office and Abigail took a sip of the bourbon. I only realised when she started to cough that the only bottle I had here was one of my better ones, and could be a bit strong if you weren’t used to it.
“You have good taste in your alcohol. I was only expecting Jack Daniels. Not the good stuff.”
“I aim to please. Now, do you want to tell me what the hell is going on?? Sienna told me a bit after her hen party, but it didn’t sound serious enough to get you into this state.”
