He stood her on her feet in the large shower and turned on jets of warm water and soon they were kissing while he ran his hands over her and she caressed him.

He turned off the water and got a thick towel, handing one to her and taking another as he turned to dry her with light teasing strokes that made her want to toss the towel and make love where they stood. They dried each other and in minutes, he crossed the room to open a drawer and returned with a condom, which he put on while she kissed him. His skin was damp, warm, and she ran her hands over his body. He was hard, ready to love.

His brown eyes were dark with desire. He cupped her breasts, leaning down to kiss first one and then the other. She held his upper arms and closed her eyes as he circled each nipple with his thumb and forefinger. Moaning softly, stepping closer to slip her arm around his neck, she stood on tiptoe to kiss him.

As they kissed, his hands closed on her waist and he lifted her. She clung to him, wrapped her arms around his neck and her legs around his hips, sliding down slowly while he entered her.

She gasped with pleasure, moving on him. He thrust into her and in minutes they rocked together fast, until she climaxed, crying out and clinging to him while ecstasy enveloped her.

Jake pumped wildly, bringing her to a second climax as he thrust hard and deep and reached his own release.

He kissed her, a slow, hungry kiss that was also confirmation of exciting, mind-blowing sex.

In minutes when their breathing slowed, he carried her back into the shower to turn on warm sprays of water. After they dried, he picked her up again. “I like this, you in my arms, pressing against me so warm and soft while both of us are nude.” His voice was husky, sexy and the look in his eyes made her tingle.

He carried her back to bed with him to hold her stretched close against his side. “I don’t want to let you go,” he said.

“You don’t have to let me go for the next hour for sure. I don’t think I can stand up by myself,” she said, feeling blissful.

“Would you believe me if I told you that you’re the first woman I’ve ever brought up here?”

Startled, she looked at him. “No, I wouldn’t. You’re in magazines and society pages with gorgeous women. Are you trying to tell me you have never taken one home with you?”

“Not to this condo. That’s exactly what I’m telling you. I don’t bring them here or take them to my ranch. I’m a very good customer of one of the hotels here and I book a penthouse suite often because it’s convenient and where I take a woman if I bring anyone with me after a night out. Usually I’m at their place because then I can leave when I want. You’re the first to stay in my condo.”

She laughed. “I’m surprised and I would guess you brought me to your inner sanctum either because it was the easiest thing to do or because you know I’m not going to hunt you down or bother you later.”

He rolled on his side to look at her, playing with locks of her long hair. “Darlin’, you can come here anytime you want and I’ll be glad to see you. If you’d like to visit my Hill Country ranch, I’ll take you to visit. You’re welcome there.”

“That’s very kind, Jake. I’m flattered, I suppose, but I don’t think we really have a future together. I also don’t think you’d tell me if you knew I would come see you. Besides, I’d rather not think about that tonight. Goodbyes will come soon enough.”

“Don’t write me off so fast, Emily.”

“My goodness, that sounds like a man who is contemplating a commitment.” She feigned exaggerated surprise.

“Don’t read that into anything I’ve said, because I haven’t changed,” he said, suddenly sounding serious. She suspected he was and she needed to stick to her plan to tell him goodbye and go on her way. Because for Jake, commitment was a four-letter word.

But not now. For now, she let him pull her closer against him, and she turned on her side, her leg over his, her arm across his chest as she held him, content to lie with him.

“See, Jake,” she murmured, “this is what I want in my life, constant nights like this, spectacular sex and then just being with a special person every night possible.”

“Are you giving me a sales pitch?”

She smiled. “No. I’m explaining how I feel because you don’t comprehend that. You like coming home to an empty condo—you don’t bring anyone home with you. Ditto to your ranch. You like your solitude, your single life, your freedom—although it’s freedom from love and family and a lot of good things, so I wouldn’t label it freedom. Anyway, we don’t feel the same about how we live.”

“I know what we do feel the same about,” he said, nuzzling her neck and then running his tongue over the curve of her ear and trailing light kisses to her mouth. She rolled over into his arms and gave herself to his kiss, and conversation ended.

It was midmorning when Jake stirred, turned on his side to wrap his arms around Emily and brushed light kisses on her shoulder. She turned to him, coming awake. They had made love all through the night. He couldn’t get enough of her and, from what she’d said last night, this might be the one and only time he would get to be with her like this. If any other woman he had known had given him the same speech last night that Emily had, about one night only, he would have dismissed it as something he could change her mind about, but he hadn’t with Emily. She had a streak in her that made him feel she meant what she said and she’d have the willpower to stick with it.

She could settle for one night of love, but he didn’t want to. She had rocked his world and he wasn’t ready to see her walk out of it. And that alone was a first for him.

She had been stunning to look at last night and sex with Emily was all he had hoped for and more. How could she dazzle him in bed when she was so inexperienced, so down-to-earth practical? He’d been trying, unsuccessfully, to figure her out from the first few minutes they had met. He couldn’t understand why they had such a fiery chemistry between them. She was a puzzle in several ways, but one thing he was sure of. Even though he couldn’t meet her terms—marriage and total commitment—he wanted more than just last night with her.

He kissed her awake and they made love again and showered again and had sex again. He felt he was in paradise and he hoped she would spend the weekend with him.

It was late Sunday afternoon when she sat up. “Jake, it’s ten minutes after three,” she said, sounding breathless while she looked down at him and frowned.

“Time for love,” he drawled and pulled her down. She opened her mouth to protest and he covered her mouth with his, kissing her until she wrapped her slender arms around him and kissed him in return.
