“How did you get over it? Get over what happened to you?”

Poor little bird.

“You never get over it,” he said solemnly. “You learn to deal with it. You find people to help you through it.”

“Who helped you?” she whispered, her eyes still out in front of them, but it didn’t bother him. If it was easier for her to talk to him like this, then he would give her that.

“I didn’t really have anyone for a long time. I was too consumed with not trusting anyone. But when I went to live with Sergio, I had Rosita there for me. She was there for all of us.”

“You mean Dominic, and Rick.”

“Danny too. She was the mother that we needed. Sergio’s wife, Dominic’s mother, died in a shootout and Rosita stepped up taking care of them when they needed it. She did the same for me too.”

“Are Rick and Danny like you too?”

“You mean … did Sergio take them in too?” She nodded, still keeping her eyes away from him.

“Yes. He has a tendency to take in strays.”

They were quiet for a while after that, both of them lost in the thoughts in their head.

Looking out over the town as the sun started to set and the day came to a close, with her wrapped in his arms, he knew he had finally found the salvation he had searched for.

It hadn’t come from vengeance, or the bloodshed and violence like he’d thought it would.

It came from the beautiful blond little bird in his arms.

“I want to get better,” she whispered.

“I know little bird. And you will. I promise you will.”

He leaned down and kissed her on the head, hugging her a little tighter.

You will little bird.

“Hey.” The whispered words floated through her sleepy mind, as she slowly came to.

“Little Bird.” It came again, and she smiled.

Mark’s voice was one of the best things she had ever heard.

Soft and growly.

“Glad you like it, little bird.”
