Zeus was the king of the Gods.
His decree was final
and there was very little
I could do to help her.
I closed my eyes, trying to think,
and I remembered his then-young face
when he took me in despite the odds,
when he helped me see my father.
I was sure that somewhere
inside him there lived that boy-God,
the one who let kindness lead him.
If I could just appeal to him instead…
‘Please, Hades.’
I made my voice soft like honey.
‘You are so much better
than your brothers.
Let her go and if she loves you
she will return to you willingly.’
There was a hesitation in his eyes
and I leapt at my chance.
‘You are better than this.’
But His Eyes Narrowed
‘You forget your place,’
he growled at me.
I should have been afraid,
but his words made me laugh.
‘I have never had a place.
What do you think it is
that gives me my courage?’
He turned away from me.
