I know that, but maybe she misses Emma. We should come back. Overnight is a long time to leave her.
She’s watching TV and having homemade popcorn and grandma coffee for breakfast.
She doesn’t miss Emma at all (or you). And giving her this time with someone who isn’t Emma is healthy.
Popcorn for breakfast? And what even is grandma coffee? You’re not a grandma.
Popcorn is protein and grandma coffee is decaf coffee with milk, sugar, and whipped cream. It’s basically a milkshake.
And Maddy is the closest thing I have to a grandchild right now since none of my children want to give me one.
Let me live.
Okay crazy lady. Spoil the child.
It is my absolute pleasure. Also, we almost finished Harry Potter last night, but she wanted to leave the last chapter for the two of you to read together.
If I haven’t said it before, I’m proud of you, honey. Maddy loves you and it’s beautiful to see.
I love her too.
And Emma?
Don’t be nosy.
Do you even know me?
Well enough to know I tell you something today and everyone else knows it tomorrow.
Bullshit. I’m a vault.
Keep telling yourself that.
I know when one of my children is trying to distract me, but you don’t have to answer. I saw you kiss her on the dance floor and the look on your face when you did. And you don’t spend the night with a girl, ever.
It’s not that big of a deal.
I know talking about feelings makes you uncomfortable and that’s okay. You’ll talk when you’re ready. But just know that you deserve all the love in the world and so does Emma. I’ve always known you had it for each other, and I’m so happy you are both finding your way.
Thanks, Rachel.
I love you honey, and I love Emma too. You two take all the time you need. Maddy will be fine.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Jeremy
“That’s not coffee. It’s candy in liquid form.”
I hear Emma speaking, but none of her words register as I sit at the small table in the hotel lobby, gripping my phone so tightly I’m surprised the screen doesn’t crack. One minute we were bantering about my love of ridiculously sweet coffee and the next minute I glanced down at my phone, only to find another email from the guy claiming to be my brother.
