I roll my eyes and hook my arm around his neck. “Clean up your mess then, and then get to work.”

The fresh smell of bacon just does something to me. Since Kai has been cooking nearly every day, he has basically become a chef. My own personal cook and I throw that shit in Sydni’s face anytime I can. She has to do all the cooking for Brice, and I bask in my win.

Those three are supposed to be coming back to visit us. Ever since I told her we were alive, which was about three months ago, she’s been trying to get back to see me. I nearly went to her, but when she said that things with Brice’s pack were getting heated—especially with hismatebeing a Vampire—it was best I stayed away.

I’m not surprised his pack doesn’t take too kindly to creatures outside of their own.

As for Alaric, well, we keep in touch but that’s about it. We still have a long way until we face our agreement, and from my understanding, he is looking for a way out of our contract, or at least how to conceive a child without him touching me.

Then there is Kayn, who we haven’t heard from, which concerns me. The phone he had prior to us going under was shut off, and I know that Kai wants to go find him. My guess is he is attempting to get to Lucifer, and I really don’t want to go anywhere near the Beyond right now. I may be what people are calling theAuralock, but it’s only when absolutely fucking necessary. I’m annoyed at the title, if I’m honest, but it’s better than what they’re calling Kai.

‘K’.

Fuckingboring.

Two months after we woke, he got a call from someone within Sidence, asking for help. He’s no hero, nor am I, but when it was a bunch of kids being trafficked outside of the city during the reconstruction of the Hauses, wecouldn’t ignore it.

Over the past several months, him and some of his other associates, have created safe hubs between Calysera and Uthara. His reach isn’t too far, yet, but he’s getting there.

It’s particularly why we haven’t left Aurelia Peaks, even if all I’d like to do is leave everything of my past life behind.

About three months ago, a gate opened in Sidence and I nearly died thinking that something had happened and thatcunthad returned. However, it was just a breach of some Underlings and Pyrehounds, and they were easily killed by myself and Kai. It’s where‘Auralock’came in and I nearly threw up. Foul, giving me some type of code name like I'm an anti-hero or something.

Yuck.

But, I don’t want any of that world in mine, and if I have to kill or shove everything back beyond the gates to the Beyond to keep it away, fuck it, I’ll be their Auralock, or whatever.

The moment my plate is being sat in front of me, a second one of cat food is placed beside it. I nestle into the barstool, and go for my bacon, then the fluffy pancakes he hasperfected.

The eggs are good, but nothing tops the sweet, banana pancakes.

I groan as I feast. “I worked up an appetite.”

“You laid there. I did all the work.”

Glaring at him, I point my fork in his direction. “Fuck you.” Then stab it straight down into another bite.

He laughs just as his phone rings.

“Let me have some.”

“Hello?” Kai answers on the second ring.

I grab another bite of the pancake and put it to Mister’s open mouth. He pulls it and sits back, purring as he chews. “Don’t cats die to honey?” I ask, grabbing a bite for myself in the process.

“Oh no—”He fake gags, and wobbles while taking a step.“I—can’t—breathe…”

“Hah hah. You and Kai have been spending too much time together.”

The feline laughs, and steps back to his food.

That’s when Kai sighs, and it doesn’t sound good. My brows furrow as I lean into my hand. He looks back at me, and I bite mybottom lip.

“Got it. Thanks.” He hangs up and then tucks his phone right into his pocket. The look he gives me tells me I’m not going to like this, or at least won’t enjoy whatever he has to say.

“Remember that gate that opened several months ago in Demour?”

“I think so. The gates have been opening so frequently I’m having a hard time keeping them straight.” I grab my tomato juice and take a sip. “Why?”
