“So are you okay?”

I nodded, wondering whether I’d be better carrying a board around that said I was pregnant rather than announcing it individually.

“Yeah, I’m good, thanks. You?”

I twisted my hair into a ponytail as he watched me, and I felt a little uncomfortable.

“Yeah. How’s Mara?”

“Um, she is great. You know she is with my brother, right?”

Edward nodded before shrugging.

“Who doesn’t?”

Everyone knew that Ryan and Mara were an item, seeing as Ryan had made a point of meeting her after school occasionally, publicly claiming her as his. Mara loved it, reminding me that a possessive man was not always a bad thing.

“So, are you and Theo still—” he swallowed, and I decided just to tell him.

“I’m pregnant.”

The silence is deafening as the hurt swirled in Edward’s eyes.

It’s an odd situation- we were friends, but Edward held a torch for me that I couldn’t seem to extinguish. Despite Theo putting him in his place, Edward wasn’t at all fazed by him.

“Congratulations,” Edward said hoarsely, forcing a smile as his eyes dropped to my stomach.

“Thanks,” I murmured as the teacher walked into the room, commanding attention. I needed to inform the school, I realized as I tugged my book out of my bag.

Edward slumped into his chair beside mine, and he sent me a melancholy smile when I caught his eye.

For the rest of the lesson, I struggled to stay awake, my body temperature constantly fluctuating as I alternate between fanning myself and hugging myself. I made my way through school to my next class in a daze, feeling like I was a million miles away.

Mara caught up with me, eyeing Edward suspiciously when he greeted her with a wink.

“You okay? You look a little pale,” she said with concern, her vanilla perfume making me feel nauseous.

“It’s just this constant nausea. I’m tired, but all I do is sleep. It’s horrible,” I admitted, as Mara dug around in her bag, pulling out a candy bar.

“Eat that. At least if you’re throwing up, you will get some sugar from it.”

“Thanks.” I laughed, unwrapping it gratefully.

“So have you had your scan date through yet?” Mara asked hopefully as I shook my head.

“No, but I wonder whether they will still do a dating one considering the sexing scan is within like, four weeks.” I wondered aloud as Mara reached forward to stroke my tummy.

“Aww, I can’t believe you’re having a baby Theo.” Mara crooned as I rolled my eyes.

“Or a baby me.” I pointed out as she nodded.

“Pink or blue. I can’t wait to find out what you’re having!”

I reach my class, sighing at the fact I’m barely halfway through the day. Nausea seems to have subsided thanks to Maras’s little bar of wonder, and I suppressed another yawn.

Theo’s eyes flashed into my mind as I felt the excitement growing in my stomach.

I was having his baby!
