CHAPTER 23

CALEB

Igroaned, my brain aching as I rolled over in bed. What was that fucking noise?

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Am I dead?

Bang. Bang. Bang.

“Summer!” A voice called from downstairs.

I peeled one eye open, my vision swimming before me. My mouth tasted sweet, and I vaguely remembered the party last night.

‘Chug! Chug! Chug!’

Oh, fuck.

I sat up slowly, positive I was going to vomit.

“Summer! Are you here?!” The voice yelled again, and I gritted my teeth, annoyed that no one thought to answer the door.

Inconsiderate.

I rose, realizing I was wearing only jeans.

Where is my shirt?

Bang. Bang.

Why is it so fucking bright?

I walked down the stairs with difficulty, almost losing my footing when I finally made it to the front door.

“Has someone died?” I growled as I opened it, and Jade pushed past me in a cloud of delicious perfume.

“Where’s Summer? What’s that smell?” Jade wrinkled her nose at me as I shrugged. “Have you beendrinking? It’s two in the afternoon Caleb, for fuck’s sake.”

“Hey, Jade. No worries about waking me up. I’m just fuckinghanging. No one is in, or I wouldn’t have had to get out of my warm bed to tell you as much,” I snapped. I shuffled into the kitchen, pulling open the fridge door, then drank orange juice straight from the carton. I spotted my aviators on the counter and slipped them on.

Hello, darkness.

I threw the empty carton in the bin and turned to see Jade quickly averting her eyes.

“Were you checking me out? You’re allowed, you know, boyfriend or not. I won’t tell on you,” I smirked as she sighed, pushing her sleek black hair behind her ear. If only she were a bit more relaxed, maybe we could’ve had some fun.

“I think I may be the only girl in the world immune to your charms, seriously.”

I shrugged, no longer interested in the conversation. “Whatever. I’m going to bed. Join me if you want or don’t. Wait for Summer if you like. I need to sleep.” I turned to walk away, thoughts of my soft pillow the only driving force in propelling my feet forward.

“Why do men cheat?” Jade blurted out, her voice shaking. I stopped, spinning around to look at her. She wore tight jeans and a flowing red top that showed off her flawless skin; her lips painted the same red to match. Her almond eyes stared into me, and I saw hurt brimming there.

Has he cheated on her? The saintly boyfriend? Who the fuck is better than her?

“Because we think with our dicks,” I answered honestly.
