“I love you, Chardonnay,” I replied. I didn’t have anything else to say.

She smiled softly then said, “I love you too.”

I looked in the sideview mirror and noticed Armond’s car behind us. I smirked. I knew he wouldn’t let me just leave. He would ensure my safety, and in that moment, I realized I loved him more than I’d ever loved anyone and I would have to let everything go accordingly to ensure I had a future with this man.

TWENTY-FIVE

Armond Davis

“WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED? Where the hell were you to let someone get that fucking close to my wife?!” I barked.

The second I made sure Brandy and Chardonnay were secure in their car and driving off, I went straight to Serg who was stepping out of the restaurant while wiping his hands with a paper towel.

“What are you talking about? I went to the bathroom. What are you doing here and… wait, where are the girls?”

“Where are the girls?” I replied mockingly. “You are no longer part of my personal detail. See to it that you get the fuck on before I act on my first thoughts instead.”

“Sir? I’m sorry. I couldn’t hold it any longer. I had to take a shit. Bryce said he would cover the girls. Where is he?” he asked in a panic.

“Bryce is dead. Give me your issued cell.”

He shook his head and handed it to me without further rebuttal.

“You allowed my wife and sister-in-law to be in harm’s way. I’ll let Arlando handle you. I have places to be.”

I walked off before he could say a word. I looked over my shoulder to make sure he wasn’t about to step. I’d murder him right here if he tried it. I’d catch up to Brandy soon enough.

When he didn’t follow, I hopped in my car and dialed my brother.

“What the fuck just happened?” Arlando barked. I chuckled because I asked the same damn question just minutes ago. My phone had been ringing nonstop. “Why are my people cleaning up a dead man at Ruby’s?”

“Jeffrey.” I exhaled. He sucked his teeth like I knew he would.

“What happened?”

I sighed. “Someone came to start asking questions. Bryce was already dead when I arrived and Serg was taking a shit.”

“Taking a shit? Taking a fucking shit?”

“Yes. I stripped him of his duties and I expect you to handle him when he arrives,” I said.

“Oh, it’s up. Why didn’t you?”

“I needed to catch up to the girls. They got a good head start on me, but I can’t leave them out in the open without some kind of protection. Who knows who else could be coming their way.”

“Hmph. Maybe we need to ship his head to them. No one would come lurking.”

“I would agree.”

“Why do you sound like that?”

I couldn’t say a word. I should’ve played this out wiser. Not only did I further put a target on Brandy, but I also now put one on my family as well. Killing Jeffrey’s brother, Joshua, wasn’t on my list of to-dos.

I reacted before any realization could sway my motives. It wasn’t until he thudded to the ground that I realized who he was. Now, I had broken the families’ treaty and it was for someone who wasn’t directly involved. I was pissed and beyond disappointed in myself.

“I broke the treaty.”

“Fuck that treaty.”
