“Is that what you think?”
“That’s what I know.”
“So, in all the time that we were together, you don’t feel like I cared about your feelings? If your answer is no, then you’re wrong.”
Irritated that he didn’t even give me the chance to respond, I frowned. “Well damn. I guess you didn’t want me to answer the question, huh?”
Lifting his hands, he said, “I apologize. I shouldn’t have done that.”
“Not if you want to hear what I have to say.”
“Okay, go ahead.”
“Thank you,” I replied. “To answer your question, I do think there were times when you cared, but when it came to you doing you…how I felt didn’t matter.”
“That’s not true.”
“That’s very true. The majority of our arguments were about you going out with your friends and coming back smelling like another woman’s perfume. That was a constant thing. And before you try to feed me some bullshit about how you can’t control other women, just know that I’m already geared up and ready to battle with you on that argument.”
“I wasn’t going to say that, but that is a very true statement.”
“Whatever. Bottom line, I’ve seen you when you’ve had too many drinks. You get too comfortable with other women, and I’ve warned you about that many times. But you felt like I was being too dramatic and jealous. Hmm…look where you ended up. Your actions landed you in some shit that you can’t charm your way out of.”
“You’re right. Everything you’re saying right now is absolutely right. I’m not here to dispute what you’re saying, I’m here to get my wife back. Just tell me what you want me to do, and I’ll do it.”
My eyes widened. He couldn’t be serious.
“Jayson, you’re joking, right?”
“No, I’m not,” he replied without hesitation. “I’ve been begging for this moment, hoping that you would just sit down with me and tell me what I needed to do.”
“First of all, you showed up at my aunt’s house in a whole relationship, embarrassed me in front of my family and you still can’t admit that you have a problem in more ways than one.
“I didn’t say that I don’t have a problem.”
“You didn’t have to. I know you feel that way.”
“Okay, I’ll handle whatever issues I have. As far as the embarrassment that I’ve caused you, I truly apologize, and this situation with Ashlynn, she’s just a little fling. It’s nothing like me and you.”
“There is no me and you!”
“Don’t say that. We can still fix this.”
“Jayson, you slept with another woman and were forced to tell me about it because you thought she was pregnant. I’m not interested in fixing anything with someone that doesn’t respect me.”
“I made a mistake. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect you.”
“Oh, yes it does. If you respected me, you wouldn’t have let cheating cross your mind long enough to act on it. But you did, and that says enough to me.”
He dropped his shoulders, a deep sigh escaping his lips. “So, you’re not going to give our marriage another chance? You’re just going to give up on us?”
“Jayson, I’ll never deny the fact that I loved you. I’ll never deny the fact that at one point, I thought you were the man that I would spend the rest of my life with. But now, I know that we weren’t meant to be together, and it’s not just because you cheated. It’s because it was so easy for me to walk away from you. Yeah, it may have taken me a minute to sit down with you. But now, I know that was out of fear,” I said. “I was afraid that my feelings would come flooding back, and I would be forced to tackle saving our marriage. But I’m sitting with you right now, and I don’t feel a single thing. That means something.”
“Wow, are you serious?”
“I’m very serious.” I knew my words sounded harsh, but that wasn’t my intention. I was just speaking straight from the heart. “I truly needed this. I needed to know that I made the right decision when I walked away. No matter what anyone has to say, I didn’t throw our marriage away. You did. But I think it’s safe to say that we were doomed from the start. It takes a lot more than just love to keep a marriage together. That was all we had. I pray that you have something much different with the next person you choose to spend the rest of your life with. I certainly plan to.”
“And is that someone, Don?”
