I couldn’t really explain the issue with my grandmother. Whenever it came to me and Kendra, her attitude was always on ten.

Leaning over to hug her, I said, “You know I was going to come over here and speak. I was just waiting on Kendra.”

“Mmhmm,” she sneered before squeezing my hips. “Girl, what have you been doing? These things are spreading quite a bit.”

“I haven’t been doing anything different than what I normally do, Granny.”

“You sure? You’re starting to look a little hefty from the waist down. Don’t be letting yourself go. You’re a married woman.”

I frowned.

This was the first time I’d heard anything negative regarding my figure. Sure, I’d put on a few pounds since Jayson and I had been going through the divorce. But it wasn’t something that I was ashamed of. In fact, I was actually enjoying my new curves.

Shrugging, I sat down in the chair across from her. “Well, I’m sorry you don’t approve. But I love all of this little weight gain.”

“Mmhmm. You better be careful. Men don’t like when you’re all slim and trim and then start packing on the pounds. That’s exactly how they end up in the arms of another woman, and I’m sure you don’t want to deal with that again. I suggest you—”

“What the hell!” Kendra snapped. “First of all, Nova isn’t with that lame-ass anymore, and the divorce papers should be getting signed as we speak. Second, my cousin looks good as hell with her happy curves. Third, why would you fix your mouth to make her think that her body is what she needs to keep together for her husband not to cheat?”

“Kendra Nicole Jeffries,” Aunt Patricia scolded. “Don’t you start with all of your craziness. I’ve got more than just family here today.”

“Yeah, well, you should’ve given them a heads up.”

My grandmother shook her head. “I don’t know what you were expecting, Patricia. You know this wild child of yours doesn’t have any home training.”

“Wild child?” Kendra blurted.

“That’s what I said.”

I took a deep breath, knowing that this situation was only going to get worse before it got better. “Let’s just calm down. I’m too hungry to go back and forth. What time are we eating?”

“In about five minutes,” Aunt Patricia replied.

“Cool. The sooner the better.”

“Ain’t that the truth,” Kendra chimed in as she finally sat down.

I glanced around the yard, trying not to look as uncomfortable as I felt. But there wasn’t much I could do about it. My grandmother had gotten under my skin, and once she did that, it took a while for me to pull myself back together.

Finally returning from doing whatever she was doing, Nicolette approached the table and eased down in a chair next to our grandmother. “You two are late. But it’s nice to see you guys.”

“Whatever,” Kendra shot back. “Unlike you, we weren’t interested in being here for ass-kissing hours.”

“Damn, hello to you too, little sis.”

“Mmhmm.”

Waving them off, my grandmother looked back at me. “So, back to this divorce. You’re really going to go through with it?”

Nicolette rolled her eyes. “Why are we entertaining this nonsense? There’s no way Nova’s serious about divorcing Jayson. She just wants to teach him a lesson.”

“Teach him a lesson? Is that what you think I’ve been doing for the last six months?”

“Of course. That’s what I would do.”

“Yeah, well, I’m not you. I meant every word I said. I’m divorcing his ass.”

Nicolette paused, my words finally syncing in. “Damn, you’re serious, huh?”
