“But I do,” he said, tucking his bottom lip between his teeth. “We talked quite a bit when we weren’t fuc—”
Quickly interrupting, Denver lifted his hands. “Okay, that’s enough. I’m not trying to hear all of that. Alauni’s like a sister to me and that’s too much information.”
“Well, you should have thought about that before you hired his ass to work side by side with me,” I blurted.
“First of all, you already know that I don’t have any control over that. We needed an assistant coach for the track team. He applied, and he just so happened to be the best man for the job.”
“Yeah, okay. We both know that it didn’t take much for him to get through the door.”
Eyeing me, Law licked his lips and took his time closing the space between us. He didn’t stop until his mouth was inches away from mine.
Shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants, he said, “Does my presence put your body in that much of an uproar that you can’t find a way to say nice things to me?”
I didn’t want to admit it, but his presence sent my body into overdrive.
If Denver wasn't in the room and we weren’t on school property, I would have been on top of the desk riding Law’s dick by now.
But I had to get that out of my head.
I couldn’t let him see me fall weak to his question.
Taking a step back, I sucked my teeth. “Law, I’m not messed up about you or your presence. I just don’t need you bringing our past on school grounds. Here, I’m a professional. There’s nothing more important to me than my students and my athletes. I don’t need outside drama to get in the way of that.”
“Who says that I’m trying to bring you any outside drama? I can be just as professional as you can. Let’s not forget, I was on my good boy shit when we first met. You’re the one that snatched me out to my car and rode my dick in the backseat.”
“You’re right, and that was supposed to be a one-time thing. You were supposed to think that I was the wrong kind of woman for giving it up on the first night. But no, you were down for fucking me over and over again, cuddling and engaging in conversation afterward. That’s not how that was supposed to work.”
Denver stepped in. “Okay, you two sound childish as hell. If anyone else was standing here, they would question if either of you were two highly educated individuals,” he said, shaking his head. “Bottom line, you’re both going to be working together. As always, Alauni, you’re in charge of the girls team and Law, you’ll take over working with the boys.”
I wanted to object, but seeing as my educational status was coming into question, I decided to remain quiet. Of course, that didn’t stop me from wanting to punch Denver in the nose for his comments.
He knew about my history with Law.
He knew that I'd walked away from him because I was feeling him way more than I wanted to. As a good friend, he should have made sure that Law wasn't this damn close to me.
But that was typical Denver, doing whatever he could to prove a point.
And right now, he was trying to prove that Law was the one for me and I couldn’t run from fate.
“I can handle taking over the boys team,” Law said, smiling. “I’m good as long as she’s good.”
There was way more hidden behind the grin that he'd conveniently plastered across his face. Law wasn't going to play nice. Especially seeing as he still wanted me in more ways than one. But I had to be stronger than him. I had to prove to myself that I could be the ultimate professional without crossing the line. I didn't give a damn about how good of a guy that he'd presented himself to be, I wasn't interested in finding out whether or not all of that was a lie.
“I’m fine,” I said before walking towards the door.
But before I could pull it open, Denver said, “Law, can you excuse us for a minute?”
“Sure, no problem.” Before stepping out, he leaned into my ear. “I know you’re still afraid to be feeling me the way that you do, and I don’t blame you. But I’m not the man you keep trying to make me out to be. I still stand firm on the way that I feel about you. Eventually, you’ll see that.” Kissing my cheek, he gave my arm one last touch before strolling out of the office.
As soon as the door shut, Denver broke into laughter.
“What the hell is so funny?” I snapped.
“Damn, I don't think I've ever seen you that speechless. I mean, I knew that you were hung up over this guy, but seeing it live…man, it's crazy.”
“I really hate you, you know that? I swear, if I hadn’t known you since we were in diapers, I would disown your ass.”
“Why? Because I’m making you face the truth?”
