“And what did you find?” Frank asked, tilting his head at them. “Because we told you she was innocent.”
“You don't know that,” Maddox chirped up as he glanced at us. “You guys don't know that she isn't playing you.”
“How about you worry about your own problems,” Frank growled at Maddox, and I tensed up.
“What did you find?” Jay asked, calmer than the others. He waved a hand at Ralph. “I'm guessing those are the results that Katie ran.”
Ralph tapped his fingers on the table. “She told us she was there one second and then the next, unable to move. She knew her body was moving, but she wasn't doing it.”
“So, she was possessed,” I state, feeling my voice shake.
“Or she's just acting like it,” Maddox snapped.
I knew she wasn't acting. Someone who cares and is soft wasn't going to act like this. She was genuine in everything she did. She wouldn't have put so much time and energy into getting to know me for her to hurt us.
“Jillian isn't like that,” I offered.
“She stabbed Frank,” Maddox argued. “Clearly, she is.”
“Because she was possessed,” Frank snapped back. “I don't know how many times I need to say that. She didn't know what she was doing!”
“Enough,” Ralph's voice echoed around us, and we all fell quiet. “I had Katie run some tests on her, which came back inconclusive.”
My stomach sank further. Were Frank and I the only ones who thought she was being honest? Did everyone else think she was faking it?
“When is she getting released?”
“She's not,” Jennisa said, giving us a shrug. “She is not to be trusted.”
I felt like my world was tilting. I bite hard onto my cheek, tightening my fingers around Frank's hand. They couldn't be serious right now.
“Bring them in,” Ralph said, waving a hand. The doors to the side opened, and Katie walked in with Jillian. Jillian looked exhausted, with dark bags under her eyes. She looked broken as she stepped into the room. I could see whatever had happened had taken a toll on her, and I didn't like it.
Katie looked uncomfortable, and I wondered why. Did she think that Jillian was also playing us? Or did she feel bad about everything that was happening?
“Katie, tell them what you've all done.”
Katie looked at us, her eyes landing on me last. She gave me a sympathetic smile before turning her gaze back to the Council. “While in custody, we've run some tests on Jillian.”
“Such as?” Frank asked angrily.
Katie swallowed. “The first test was questioning. Twenty-four hours straight.”
My eyes widened.
“And then a lie detector test right after.”
“Did she pass that?”
Katie nodded. “She did.”
“Then she's innocent.” Frank snapped, waving a hand at Jillian. “Jesus, look at her. She's exhausted.”
I felt tears burn my eyes as Jillian looked ready to drop from exhaustion.
“That is all part of the interrogation, Frank.” Ralph snapped. “We take everything very seriously.”
“I understand interrogating someone who deserves it, but Jillian doesn't. She looks like she hasn't slept since you took her!” Frank yelled, looking ready to lose his cool.
