She simply shrugged, taking a few steps toward me. “It's not news you're only with him because you can bear a child, Nina. Everyone in the pack knows that. Otherwise, he would be with someone like me. Someone who knows how to please a man.”
I felt my face grow hot, and my fingers curled into tight fists. I thought of Frank's words from before. Why is it so easy for you to argue with me and yell at me, but anytime anyone else says anything even remotely sinister to you, you just take it?Frank had been right. I had just taken it, but if I really wanted to make this my home, I wasn't going to stand and take it anymore.
I straightened my back. “You were correct on your first statement, Kailey. I'm his wife. And I think you forget the power that goes with that. I may not be liked, but I hold the future of his entire pack right now, and I think it would be wise if you turned around and walked away.”
She looked a little stunned by my words, so I took a few steps towards her. “And we have no problems in the bedroom. None whatsoever. I don't share details of what goes on behindclosed doors, but this baby wasn't just made magically. So, I would appreciate it if you kept your disrespectful thoughts to yourself. I wouldn't want to have to inform Frank that anything was causing me any stress that could affect this pregnancy.”
It was a low blow, but I used it. I couldn't say Frank would side with me because I didn't know if he would. I, however, knew he was clearly excited for this baby and would protect it at all costs.
She scuffed. “Frank wouldn't side with you.”
I tilted my head, placing my hand on my stomach. “Want to find out? Because I think the trunk full of baby items would disagree.” I waved my hand with the diamond ring. “I think this would disagree.”
She snarled at me before turning and freezing as Frank stood behind her. I watched as Frank walked right past her towards me, only making my point. Kailey turned, storming off, and I couldn't help but feel a little victory.
“You don't share our bedroom activity with the girls?” he asked, and I elbowed him, feeling my face grow red.
“That's the part you're getting hung up on? What about the part where she stated she could please you better?”
He smirked, stepped closer to me, and my ass hit the trunk. “I don't think we have any problem in the bedroom. Pretty sure this baby states that for us.”
I felt my stomach flip at the closeness. “People can have bad sex and still have kids.”
“That's true,” he purred, his lips pressing against mine softly. I couldn't hold back the moan as he kissed me.
He wrapped his arms around me, tugging me close. “I'm proud that you stood up for yourself.”
I blushed, and Frank pinched my cheek. “Like a proud papa,” he teased.
I rolled my eyes and elbowed him again. “Alright, let's go now. You've embarrassed me enough today.”
Frank stepped back and laughed harder. My eyes went past him and widened as I watched darkness come at us. “Frank?” I could hardly get the words out before it hit us. Frank slammed into me, and we slammed into the car. Frank was quick at catching us before we fumbled to the ground. I squeezed my eyes shut, my hands instantly going to my stomach.
“Fuck.” Frank turned, growling loudly at the darkness. I watched as Frank jumped in front of me and shifted. One second, Frank was himself, and another, Frank was in his wolf form. He charged at the darkness, which seemed to jump back. Frank howled loudly, standing in front of me in a protective stance. I slowly pulled myself up, holding onto the car.
I started seeing him in his wolf form for the first time. Frank was a large wolf with strong legs and a large torso. He was larger than any of the other wolves I'd come across, and he earned his Alpha spot for good reason.
The darkness went in the opposite direction, and Frank followed, but it was moving faster than he and disappeared moments later. Frank froze in the street before he turned, looking back at me.
And then I felt it. Wetness. I looked down, and I felt suddenly sick as redness trailed down my legs. I suddenly couldn't breathe, tears blooming quickly.
“Frank?” I pulled my gaze back up to him, fear clawing at my throat. “What’s…happening…”
Chapter 20 - Frank
Nina looked at me with pure fear as she looked from her legs back up to me. I watched as blood trailed down her leg, instantly knowing what that meant. I was moving quickly, shifting back into my human form and carrying her into the car. I drove like a madman across town to the healer.
Nina was pale in the passenger seat, her fingers clutching the seat with white knuckles. Her entire body was shaking as she sat there. I could see her head spinning, going over all the possibilities that could be happening. “Frank, you're speeding,” she whispered as she looked at me.
I could hear the fear in her voice, so I reached over, grabbed her hand, and held onto it. Her lower lip quivered, and she swallowed. “I'm sorry…. if I lose...”
“Don't,” I said softly. If anything were to happen, it wouldn't have been her fault. It was my own. I was supposed to protect her, and I hadn't. “This isn't on you.”
I should have been paying attention to what was going on around us, but I wasn't. This wasn't her fault, and I was going to let her think it was.
“It's going to be okay,” I said softly to her. I didn't know if it was true, but I was going to put everything in, making sure it was.
“You can't promise that,” she whispered, knowing I was just as weak in this.
