Still nothing.
Several minutes go by before it finally rings.
It’s Kenji.
“What happened?” I ask as I answer the phone.
I expected Kai, not Kenji.
“He’s fine. He wants to see you though. What are the chances that you can sneak out of your room?”
My heart beats faster in my chest. “My room? Easy. The house is another story. There are guards everywhere and the doors have sensors on them.”
“There is a door two down from your room, correct? Right-hand side of the hall.”
“Yes,” I murmur, unsure how he knows about it. “It’s a closet.”
“Good. Wait ten minutes, then go into that closet and close the door. I’ll meet you there.”
He hangs up before I can question him.
My heart is racing as I look at the time. Looking down, I frown. I wasn’t dressed to see him. I need to change.
Rushing around my room, I decide on a pair of black leggings with a dark gray off the shoulder sweater.
Slipping on a pair of flats, I look at myself in the mirror. You can see my bra strap, but my other option is to take it off. While I'm sure Kai would love that, I’m not sure how I feel about it yet.
I like him. So much so that I’m about to sneak out of my house to see him.
It’s dangerous. He could be using me as a pawn too, but inside I don’t believe that.
Kai is the only one outside of Miss Kelly, Killian, and Callum who has ever taken the time to listen to me. He asks my opinions about business and keeps me in the loop.
He sees me as an equal. As his partner.
Or he plans to kill you. That dark part of my mind who never accepts that good things can happen whispers to me.
I’m about to leave my room when I decide last minute to make up my bed with stuffed animals to make it appear as if I’m sleeping.
Hopefully, no one comes in here to check on me.
Realizing I’m now several minutes late, I crack my door, peeking out into the hall.
After straining to hear, I let out a breath I was holding.
It's clear.
Carefully closing the door behind me, I tiptoe all the way down the hall. Quietly I open the closet and slip in. I back into the closet, closing the door softly as my eyes adjusting to the darkness.
Then I hear a click behind me as a hand clamps down over my lips.
Before I can scream, Kenji whispers. “It’s me. Reach up and grab my hand. Follow me.”
Doing as he asks, I slip my hand over his as he pulls it away from my mouth. He pulls me through an opening in the back of the closet, closing the wall behind us.
Then he pulls me along with him down the dark halls.
He stays quiet as we move between the narrow walkways through the hall until he leads me to a set of stairs. We go down one set, but then he pulls me down a second set, leading me to the basement level.
