For the next forty minutes, we were forced to play a game of close-quarters cat and mouse; them chasing us while Cain tried to put distance between them.
It dragged on and on, but there was nowhere for us to go other than straight on the highway.
They were relentless, not caring how far outside of Ridgewood they were traveling, or that with every mile outside of the city, they were evenfurtheraway from their shitty town of Bridge Point.
I began to feel nauseous from the constant state of adrenaline; the stress started to make me feel like my stomach was eating itself from the inside. I wanted this nightmare to be over, and though it surprised me a little, I actually wanted to cry. Hot tears threatened to spill over my lashes, but I was doing a good job at keeping them from doing so.
Countless times, they almost ran us off the road, swerving into us and forcing Cain to manipulate the bike perfectly to keep us upright. I had no idea how fast we were traveling or where we were even going, but I found myself praying to a higher power to fuckingend thissooner than later.
My heart hammered as I held onto Cain with my head pressed against his back. I faced the right, and every time the piece of shit on that side would get close, I tried to memorize another tattoo on his body in an effort to be able to identify him in the future.
And then as quickly as it had started, the chase ended.
The bikers from The Reaper’s Wings jetted off onto the exit we were passing.
Looking over my shoulder, I watched as their motorcycles flew across the overpass and turned, getting back onto the highway going southbound.
Even above the roar of Cain's motorcycle, the sound of theirs faded into the distance.
Cain waited three more exits before he finally got off and pulled over into a dirt patch. Putting down the kickstand, he hopped off his bike, ripping off his helmet and tossing it down before doing the same to mine. His large hands grabbed my face roughly, and he slammed his lips to mine.
“Are you okay?” he frantically asked as he pulled away, still holding my face. He kissed me again before I could answer.
“I’m okay.” But I was in shock. I could feel it in the way my body trembled and my brain was at a loss for words.
Cain kissed me again, then pulled me close, hugging me so tightly I thought my boobs might explode from the pressure. I pushed him away to loosen his hold.
“I’m okay,” I repeated, not sure why I felt like I needed to. “That was…scary, for lack of a better word. What the fuck?”
“They were sending a message,” Cain told me, void of emotion. Taking a step back, he pulled his phone out of his front pocket.
“King,” he barked when he pressed the phone to his ear. He glanced at me. “Those pieces of shitReaper Wingedscumbags sent two men to tail me and Rose. They followed us almost entirely to Northwood before circling back on the highway.”
He listened to King on the other end of the line, his eyes narrowing.
“No, I’m not fucking kid—yeah. Yeah. I lost track of how many times they tried to run us off the road and tried to cause us to crash.”
Cain’s eyes were downcast to where he scraped his foot against the dirt.
“I’m not sure. I won’t risk Rose’s life to get home tonight. I’m thinking we’ll get a room somewhere.” His eyes connected with mine, silently asking if that was okay.
I nodded in response, wishing I could hear King on the other end.
“No, King, they crossed a fucking line. I don’t just want to get back at them and send them a message, I want to destroy them. Take them down completely.”
A low growl emulated from his chest, and he stared blankly out into the darkness.
“Call another emergency Church meeting right now—tell the guys. This just got a whole helluva lot worse for us and we’re not just going to just lie down and take it.”
My heart jolted. “Indy!”
Fuck. My staff needed to be on high alert, too.
“Keep one or two Sinners downstairs at the bar during Church and catch them up after. I want extra eyes around the bar and on the staff. When appropriate, warn Indy of what’s happening so she’s in the loop. We’ll be home tomorrow.”
Cain reached out and softly ran his fingers down the side of my cheek before he tucked my hair behind my ear.
“You guys stay safe, too. Update me if anything goes down.”
