Chapter 7
Trevor
It's early Monday morning and the only time I've left the hospital since last Wednesday. The sun hasn't risen, but it's not like I would even see it with my head hanging to my chest.
Nina's barely spoken more than five sentences to me in the past five days. I constantly feel like I'm on the urge of begging her to pay attention to me or demanding it. It might come to me forcing the matter...I just fear I'll scare her away.
She's already scared away.
Sighing for what must be the thousandth time this week, I focus on the ache in my ass bones. When Will told me to meet him at Nina's this morning, I don't think he meant for me to wait out on her front step. Until she gives us more than mumbled words, I won't feel comfortable in her home without her.
Kai and the other two have come and gone from the house because we needed clothes and shit, but I can't bring myself to use my key. As far as I'm concerned, Nina's locked me out, and I'll respect that. For now.
The sleepy neighborhood is just turning a light shade of pink and orange when the sound of an engine rumbles up the driveway. It must be too much to hope my neck pops because it twinges and tightens as I lift my head.Fucking ow.
My eyes burn, forcing me to rub away the dryness as I wait for Will to get out of the car. One car door slams, then another one, confusing me enough to abandon my poor eyeballs.
Beside Will, walking toward me, is Adam. Both older men are in jeans and T-shirts, but there's a calculating look in Adam's eye that I haven't noticed before.
"Good morning, son," Will greets once he's at the foot of the stairs. I grumble out something similar, my throat feeling like I have rocks stuck in it. "You look like shit. Why are you outside?"
That gets my attention. Sending a glare at Nina's dad, I stand and offer Will my key to let us in. "Didn't want to overstep."
"Don't you live here?" Adam sounds confused, but I have no energy to explain.
I must be running on about twelve hours of sleep the past five nights. Thankfully, Nina's dad is bright eyed and bushy tailed in the mornings because he explains our situation. And by situation, I mean Nina's father seems to think it's a good idea to tell this guy that we're in a polyamorous relationship and the guys and I moved in here with her because she has a really big heart.
Adam nods like he understands, but I'm still stuck on what the hell he's doing following Will into my woman's house. Then the man confuses me even more. "Trevor, can you tell me everything you know about Nina's neighbors?"
I scratch my head and frown at Will who's pulling a glass down from the kitchen cupboard. When he turns around, he catches my eye and nods. "Adam's in security, Trev. He wants to help me install some cameras and monitor Nina's safety until this bastard is caught."
"And why would he want to do that?"
Shocked by my bluntness, Will chokes on a sip of water. "Why the hell don't you ask him?"
"Fine," I huff and turn to Adam who's currently looking out Nina's front window. When did he get over there?"Why do you want to help us, Adam?"
The stranger doesn't even look at me when he replies, too focused on looking around the windowsill. "Because Will was my best friend in high school, Trevor. I've seen you and the other three guys. Imagine splitting from them for a long ass time, and being reunited when they are in a time of need."
I stay quiet until Adam turns to look me head on. "Wouldn't you do everything you can for someone you still consider family, even if life pulled you in different directions?"Fuck, he's got me there. "As far as I'm concerned, Nina's family now too. Will you let me help?"
Eyeing him as hard as I can, I try to calm the protective storm inside of me. Nina needs all the love she can get. "Welcome to the family, Adam."
"Thanks, kid." He nods, a soft smile playing on his lips which quickly turns serious. "Now, neighbors?"
Will leans against the counter while I meet Adam by the big living room window. I point to the house across the road. "Little old lady and her husband live there with their dogs. Pretty quiet, but always smiling. On the right is a single mom and her teenage son. I've seen a few other families around, but haven't paid too much attention. Everyone's friendly. The house next door was on the market when we moved in with Nina, but moving trucks were around last week getting the new residents moved in."
"I need to know if you meet anyone else. Keeping your neighbors a phone call away is a good thing in case anyone sees something odd around here. Alright?"
"Of course," I agree, grateful for a task I can actually fucking accomplish.
"And, Trev." Will shows up beside me with a hand on my shoulder. "Don't give up on her. Please."
Looking Will in the eye, I show him my soul and give him my word. "Never."
