She nods off and I just stand there like a statue, unsure and confused, and totally weirded out.
I really need to call Dori.
So I pull her door shut and do it.
“Hey, Tater!” she chirps into the phone. “You excited— “
“How much do you know about Jackal’s and Spider’s parents?” I blurt as I hurry to the fridge and grab a beer.
“Uhm... that wasn’t at all what I was expecting to talk about right now.”
I sigh and lean against the counter. “I know, sorry. I just had the strangest conversation with Nadine and thought maybe you could shed some light on it since talking to Spider is like trying to crack a safe.”
She giggles. “Yeah, he’s pretty tight-lipped, but I’m sorry, babe, I don’t know much of anything except that Mac and Angus were brothers and founders of the MC.”
“It’s fine, probably nothing. It was just weird.”
“What’d she say?”
“It’s not important.” Mainly because I haven’t told Dori that Spider kissed me and I have no intention of telling her because she’ll get crazy ideas in her head. She’s already made several comments about how cute we’d look together, I don’t need to get her hopes up.Or mine. “How are you feeling?”
“Pregnant,” my sister says through a giggle. “This baby is going to be huge. I’m barely out of the first trimester and I’m already too big for my leggings.”
I grin. “But you’re adorable with a baby bump.”
“I know right?” She snorts. “I’ll probably be able to wear the rest of my normal clothes right up until I go into labor though. Thank god I enjoy dressing like a hobo.”
Now I’m the one giggling. “Hardly. I love your style. It’s veryTheodora Marie Covington. Super cute.”
“Whatever.” Her eye roll is almost audible. “So what’s up, sister? Wasn’t Nadine’s appointment today?”
I start picking at the label on my lunchtime beer. “Yeah...”
“How’d it go?”
“Like I thought it would.”
“Uh oh.”
“Exactly. How the hell am I supposed to tell Spider that Nadine’s doctor strongly recommends she be placed into an assisted living facility? Things have been decent between us and I feel like—“
“He’s going to blow his top and blame you?”
I sigh. “Yes.”
Dori sighs too. “He probably will.”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence.”
“Oh stop.” She laughs a little, my big sister amused by all of this when I don’t think it’s funny at all. “I’m just being honest, and yeah, Spider is probably going to hate the idea but he’s too smart to put it on you forever. He’ll come around eventually, and when he does, Spider will see that having Nadine in a facility is best for both of them.”
I really fucking hope so because after he lost his shit with me last time, I’m not sure what I’ll do if it happens again. Especially since I still have to tell him everything else I need to tell him too.
Ugh.
“Well, as much as I enjoy sitting here listening to you hyperventilate into the phone, would you care to tell me why you’re on the verge of a panic attack?”
“Everything.”
