Page 40 of His Fate
Thank the gods there is a table obstructing her view.
"My mother would have loved you, Josephine. The way you challenge me with your quick wit and sharp tongue. She would have loved your generous and selfless heart, the way you care so deeply for the people in your life." I take a bite of my steak and almost orgasm from the explosion of flavor. "And my father. He would have loved you as well, solely based on the way you cook phenomenally and provide portions for someone my size so easily. And he would have loved the way you verbally roast my brothers and I."
Posey gives me a look full of so much warmth, so much pride and adoration I feel as though my heart could explode with love for her.
"I wish I could have met them and I'm so sorry I will never have the chance but I feel like I know them. I see them in you, the way you conduct yourself, the amazing man you are and whenever you talk about them. It's as if I can see your memories just as clearly as if they were my own."
She smiles then goes back to her dinner but I'm left a little speechless.
Yes, it fills me with pride that she thinks so highly of me but what she just described is an actual thing.
Memory sharing, just like dream fasting, are things that can take place once a pair of dragons mate. Quite honestly, dream fasting spans many species but varies depending on the kind. Typically dream fasting is simply sharing her mate's dreams and being able to decipher their meaning, but on rare occasions they can be prophetic and are generally specific to female dragons.
Males are warriors by nature but females are what we refer to assensitives. Once a males’ venom enters his mate she is able to see his memories clearly, learn through his experiences and deepen the life-bond that way as well as through dream fasting. Females aresensitivesin terms of their mate because of how in tune they become to them.
A female is never capable of doing either prior to completing the mating ritual and typically one is stronger than the other. Females who have a greater gift for dream fasting are typically also skilled in strategy of war and females who have a greater gift for memory sharing are typically very skilled healers. It is very rare for a female to show strength in both and the power doesn't generally manifest until the pair have been mated for at least a few years.
Which is why it's impossible that Posey meant anything by that statement. She simply will not be able to share my dreams or my memories until we've mated.
Not to mention she is part human, mostly human from what I gather since she has never shifted. It is possible for a child of a shifter and a human to favor the shifter side but it works better if the human has shifter blood somewhere in their lineage. Since my Josephine is nearly past the age one could transition for the first time, it is unlikely that she possesses many, if any, dragon traits.
Still...
"As if you've lived them?"
She nods as she swallows the last of her food. "It's like a movie. When I listen to you talk about your home, your family, things you did as a boy, I can see them in my mind's eye so vividly, it's like I was there with you."
Oh my.
"Do you ever have dreams like that? Dreams that seem so real they could be memories, just… memories of things that haven't happened yet?"
That is exactly how my mother described it. My mother was one of the few rarefemales who showed strength in both skills and it is why she was such a loved and revered queen, a perfect match for my father in every way. But even my mother didn't show her power until she had been mated to my father for almost five years.
This is just too bizarre and unfortunately, I cannot press her further until I reveal exactly what I am, what she is to a degree. And since it's getting late I feel as though my time to do that is drawing near.
Posey stands from the table to clear our dishes and I get to my feet to assist. Then my mate forces my hand when she says, "Your mother used to say something like that, didn't she? Dreams are just memories waiting to be made?"
The plate I am holding slips from my fingers but I don't even flinch when it shatters on the hardwood floor.
Posey spins from the sink, eyes wide as she darts over and crouches down, quickly picking up the bigger pieces of the broken dish.
"Are you ok?" She looks up at me, worry etched across her beautiful face.
"What did you say?"
"I asked if you were ok? You didn't cut yourself, did you?"
I shake my head. "Before that."
"About your mother?" Her nose scrunches in confusion. "I just asked what she used to say about dreams, you know, she'd put you to bed and when you were worried about your dreams she'd just say they were nothing to be afraid of. Memories yet to be made."
"I never told you that."
Posey gets to her feet and drops the broken pieces in the trash. "Yes you did."
"No, Posey, I didn't. I've never shared that with anyone, not even my brothers."
"I'm sure you did. How else would I know something like that?"
