“Also, I told him about the pregnancy.”
Linus’ stomach flipped. “You did?”
In front of him, Storm shrugged a little, but his shoulders sagged. “I wanted to regain his trust. I thought... maybe he would trust me more if I gave him information that no one else has. I’m sorry. I should’ve run it by you first. He did promise not to tell anyone else.”
Linus rubbed Storm’s back. “I understand why you did it. I’m glad it helped.”
Storm relaxed under his hands; Linus leaned in and hugged him, their helmets bumping.
They rode together companionably, drifting from one conversation to the next. Like before, they stopped every hour for Linus to stretch his legs.
It was getting dark by the time they finally reached Meadowfall. Linus slumped against Storm, completely exhausted from their day of riding.
“Just a little more to go,” Storm murmured, squeezing Linus’ knee. He pulled into the parking lot of Linus’ apartment building and parked the motorcycle.
“I’m tired,” Linus mumbled against his alpha’s back.
“I’ll carry you upstairs. Just make sure you don’t drop the helmets.”
Storm swept Linus into his arms, his solid chest warm and reassuring. Linus couldn’t help patting Storm’s jacket; he felt the vague shape of a gun in there, all hard lines under the leather.
After a while, Storm set Linus on his feet so he could unlock the apartment door.
Except he grew stiff.
Linus grew alert. “What’s wrong?”
In a low voice that chilled Linus to the bone, Storm said, “The door’s unlocked. Someone’s in there.”

DANGER
Linus wanted to grab Storm, and drag him far away.
The other part of him, the part that was logical, knew that Storm could take care of the threat without much difficulty.
“Should we call the police?” Linus whispered.
Storm hesitated. Then he pulled out his phone and pressed it into Linus’ hands. “Hades or Fury. But I think I can handle this.”
Linus watched as Storm pulled on his steel-knuckled gloves. “But...”
Storm paused with his fingertips barely touching the doorknob. When he turned his gaze on Linus this time, he was more serious than Linus had ever seen him.
“I’ve faced down gun barrels, sweetheart. I’ve been in situations far more dangerous than this. I’ve killed people. What I need you to do is stay out of the way. Stay safe. Maybe shelter with a neighbor until this is over.”
Linus swallowed, unwilling to let Storm face the danger on his own.
“Babe.” Storm leaned in so close that his eyes blurred.
For a second, Linus thought—maybe they would kiss. His heart sped up. He tilted his face toward his alpha, offering his own mouth.
Storm’s lips grazed the corner of Linus’.
The door opened.
Cold fury slammed through Storm’s face. He spun around, shoving Linus behind himself.
