Jennifer laughed. She picked up a plate and looked at the bottom. “You’re right. No price there.” She continued to pick through the dishes checking for the price.
Jennifer finally looked up at her. “I can’t find a price so why don’t you make me an offer?
“Are you serious?” Carolina gaped at her.
“Sure.” She laughed. “Sometimes I get items in and forget to price them. It doesn’t happen very often. So this must be your lucky day.”
“I haven’t had a lucky day in a while.” Carolina muttered.
“Then it’s time you should.” Jennifer stood and brushed her hands on her pants.
“I don’t know what’s a reasonable amount to offer. How much would you take?”
“You’re not a very good negotiator.” Jennifer propped her hands on her hips.
“I know.” Carolina sighed. “Normally it would probably cost a few hundred dollars.”
“True. But it’s not new and I could use the shelf space. Dishes are something that I have too much of as it is.”
“Okay. How about a hundred dollars?”
The front door dinged and Jennifer frowned. “I tell you what. I’ll let you have the set for seventy-five dollars if you wrap it yourself.”
Carolina felt her spirits lift. “Deal.” She stuck out her hand.
They shook. “I’ll bring you a box and some paper. When you’re done meet me at the desk.”
Jennifer brought her a large box and some newspaper.
Carolina sat on the floor cross-legged and began carefully wrapping her new dishes.
When she was finally done she brought the box to the front counter.
Jennifer was assisting another customer so she left the box on the counter and went in search of the furniture.
She looked through the antique side tables that were marked a little too pricey for her budget. She found a large mirror that would look good in the dining room. But she reminded herself she was here for a bed frame.
She spotted the headboard resting against the wall and stepped closer.
The piece was a queen-size Victorian headboard with a matching footboard. The headboard was scalloped and had a bouquet of flowers painted in the middle.
It was old but beautiful and something about it struck a cord with Carolina.
She looked for the price tag and held it up. “Two hundred dollars. That can’t be right.”
Jennifer appeared at her side. “I see you found what you were looking for.”
“Two hundred dollars?” She arched her brow. “That’s all?”
“Yes, for the bed. It’s a fair price given I actually got it for a lot less. Plus, there’s no matching furniture that goes with it.”
“I’ll take it.” Carolina frowned. “But I have no way to carry it home. I had to get the Second Hand shop to deliver my mattress and my dryer to my house this afternoon.”
“Oh that’s no problem. I’ll call over there and have them take the bed out to you as well.”
“They’ll do that?”
“Of course they will. The owner is my cousin Freddy.”
