“Really?” She felt her eyes light up.
“Yes. You seem trustworthy. I can write up this request and present it. But you also need to bring me in a written plan of where you are looking for employment. I don’t care if it’s folding laundry at the laundromat, just as long as it’s employment.”
“Thank you.” Carolina felt relief fill her body. She stuck out her hand.
Rebecca shook her hand. “In the meantime, we’ll send out an assessor to get the house valued. I am confident it will appraise high. So go ahead and hire Thomas, before the rain hits.” She smiled.
“I will, and again, thank you.” Carolina stood and hooked her purse on her shoulder.
She got into her car and for the first time in a while, she smiled. And she felt it all the way to her toes.
Chapter 15
Carolina called and left a message on Thomas’s phone, informing him that he got the job. Afterward she treated herself to a breakfast at the diner and had a nice conversation with Getty. Getty was the one who told her to go to Second Hand Furniture to find a dryer. She said all their stuff was basically new just had some dings on it from the factory.
After breakfast she took Getty’s advice and headed to Second Hand Furniture. Luckily she found a dryer that would be delivered that afternoon. She also found a new mattress and added it to the delivery as well. Now all she needed was a bed frame.
She headed back to her jeep. A store window decked out with pumpkins and leaves caught her eye.
Maggie’s Treasures.
It was the antique store that the guy at the motel had mentioned.
She still needed some dishes for the kitchen. Maybe she could find a set of used dishes for cheap. The dryer and mattress were well under budget which would give her plenty of available funds, if the prices were right.
She looked both ways before she crossed the street.
There was a pretty glass cake stand with decorative cupcakes perched on a refurbished rolling cart in the window display of the antique store. Whoever owned the shop, certainly had an eye for decorating.
She opened the door and stepped inside. The scent of floor polish and lemon cleaner hit her nostrils. Everything was so neat and orderly.
Shelves filled with everything one might need for a home lined the whole shop.
“Welcome. Can I help you look for anything?” A young woman in her thirties smiled from behind the counter. She was busy wrapping up a set of champagne glasses in protective paper.
“I need a lot actually. Dishes and maybe some silverware for my kitchen?”
The girl pointed. “You’ll find those on aisle three.”
“You don’t happen to have bedroom furniture do you?”
“Actually, we just got a bed frame in today. I’m sorry, but there’s no dresser or chest of drawers to go with it.”
Carolina shrugged and smiled. “That’s okay.”
“The items you are looking for will be all the way in the back near aisle six. If you have any questions let me know. My name is Jennifer.”
“Thanks, Jennifer.”
She took her time getting to aisle three. Everything commanded her attention. She found some candlesticks that would look great on her mantle but she had to control her urge to buy them. Right now she just needed the basics.
When she stepped on aisle three she saw sets of dishes in every kind of pattern and color. She found a pink and blue chintz pattern that captured her attention right away. It was a complete place setting of twelve and included teacups and a teapot.
There was another set of dishes that was just as pretty. It was a white and blue floral pattern but it didn’t have the tea cups or tea pot.
“Oh, are you interested in the Summer Chintz Pattern?” Jennifer knelt and placed a teapot on the bottom shelf.
“I am. But I’m afraid to know the price.”
