Was he trying to get me to say something I shouldn't? I had no way of knowing if he knew what she really was.
"She is here to return your missing Keeper." It was part of the reason.
He looked at me skeptically. He didn't believe that.
"So out of a whole pack of werewolves, you guys sent a girl?" He was trying to get a rise out of me but I refused to bite. I clamped my mouth shut and refused to give in to the urge to retaliate.
I was thankful that James resisted the urge to set him straight as well. He had seen Travis' ploy for what it was.
"Why didn't you trust her to do it?" he asked, stepping forward. I kept my features free from any emotion that he would be able to read. When he couldn't read me, he walked over to James. But James revealed nothing either.
"How about we cut the bullshit and you tell me the truth?" he asked, the playfulness gone from his voice.
I think I liked him better before.
"We aren't hiding anything," I lied, even though I could see by his expression that he didn't believe a word I had just said.
He was fast and I didn't have the reflexes to block the first hit. Pain exploded on my jawline and I stepped backward, feeling the impact of his fist against my face. The pain brought me to my knees.
"Don't lie to me," he yelled. His eyes were alive with anger.
A Keeper grabbed James to stop him from intervening. He struggled but he was no match against the strength that kept him captive.
Damn, that had hurt. I touched my hand to my jaw as I slowly shifted it, moving the bottom of my mouth, assessing the damage.
He was capable of breaking my jaw in two, so he hadn't hit me as hard as he could have. Why? Was he still toying with me? Inflicting small amounts of pain to get the information he wanted?
He didn't know I would not break. My mate's life ensured I would not breathe a word of why we were here.
I'm okay, I told James through our mind-link. He stopped struggling.
Travis smiled.
"This is going to be fun," he said.
Whatever he had planned was going to be painful, but I could take it. I had to.
Crystal
My marker heated up. I frowned, thinking it was impossible that there was a werewolf nearby. Flynn walked to the door and opened it. Harrison walked out first and I followed behind.
The sound of voices stopped me in my tracks.
I thought I was hearing things because it simply wasn't possible. I listened closer as I stumbled behind my father. We stepped into the foyer and I could hear the unmistakable voice of Travis talking to someone outside the front of the house.
"We aren't hiding anything."
It wasn't possible but I knew that voice. I found myself running forward.
"Stop," Flynn ordered, but I ignored him. There was nothing that was going to stop me as I rushed to the front door.
I opened the door before Flynn caught up with me, but as I stepped outside he grabbed my wrist, halting me.
"This is going to be fun," Travis said.
The sight of Kyle on his knees before Travis took my breath away. His eyes glittered with anger and the sight of blood on his face pierced my heart.
No!I wasn't able to process what I was seeing. This hadn't been the way my plan had meant to play out.
