“And how long do we have? Just until the end of the hockey season?” I ask for clarification.
“Yes, that’s right, you both have the season. It could be sooner if you come to me to show you have completed the requests adequately.”
Sam seems detached, like she might already want to run away and there’s no way I’m letting that happen. I wait for her to speak but she says nothing.
“My final instruction is to give you these envelopes from Tom. He wrote you each a letter and wanted you to read it when you felt comfortable enough to do so.” He hands us each a white envelope with Tom’s scratchy writing on it.
Sam’s hand is shaking as she takes hers. In a quiet voice, she asks, “Can we go now?”
“Yes, that’s all I have for you at the moment. This folder will give you the info on how to access the maintenance account for the horses and house as well some info I need from you, Sam, on where to send your pay, which will start immediately.”
She takes it and nods quietly, turning towards the door.
I reach out to shake Mr. Burns’ hand, “We will be in touch, thanks so much, Mr. Burns.” He holds my hand for a bit longer and levels me a look before saying quietly to me, “It’s going to work out, Drew, don’t worry too much about it. You both need to figure out some things and I think Tom has the right idea here. Just make sure you get her to tell you about Minnesota. That’s where her issues really lie.”
My eyes go wide. He knows what happened too. With that piece of info, I give a nod and leave his office to find out where Sam has gone.
