We followed Adan to the reception desk I’d visited when I first arrived. I was too dazed to take in what he said to the woman who’d greeted me, but he must have asked her to assign us a room because she programmed a key card and slid it across the counter toward Dawson. “The suite Mr. Deville has assigned you runs five hundred dollars a night.”

Dawson didn’t hesitate to hand her a credit card. “You can put it on this.”

“That’s not fair.” I glared at Adan. “The only reason we’re still here is because you insisted we stay.”

He seemed to find my protest humorous. “Ah, but I do so love taking treasure in all its forms from dragons.”

I planted my hands on my hips. “Maybe I should be the one to pay, so you don’t get quite so much enjoyment from this.”

“I suppose it’s a good thing for you that I’ve always had an affinity for fire witches.” His gaze slid toward me, the flames of hell swirling in his eyes. When Dawson shifted to block me from his view, the demon’s lips curved into the slightest of smiles. “Ahh, I forgot how you Veles men don’t have a sense of humor when it comes to your fated mates. It’s too bad that your beautiful cousin isn’t here to help smooth things over as she did between Damien and me when his dragon’s scales got all ruffled because I complimented Soleil.”

The implications of my consort’s full name finally dawned on me. “You’re related to Damien Veles?”

“Yes, he’s my cousin.” He flashed me a reassuring smile. “But don’t worry, he’s not as scary as everyone says. At least not when it comes to family, which you are.”

“I actually met him once, about five years ago.” I laughed softly and shook my head. “I was barely a teenager, and Blake said I was too young to understand how dangerous he was, and that’s why I wasn’t afraid of him.”

“You’re part of Blake Aldebrand’s coven?”

Adan answered for me, “Yes, that’s why she’s here. To deliver the Council of Five’s portion of the payment owed to me.”

Dawson’s dragon flashed in his eyes, fire erupting in his green orbs at the explanation.

“That demon’s eyes swirled with flames, too.” I darted a look toward the door they’d dragged him through.

“Does it bother you?”

“No.” I wanted to kick myself for putting the doubt that I saw in Dawson’s eyes. “Yours are totally different and sexy.”

His lips curved into a smile of pure male satisfaction. “Sexy, huh?”

“Definitely.” I stroked my thumb over the consort mark on his bicep. “I am a fire witch, after all.”

“Get a room,” Adan grumbled.

Dawson flashed him a grin and waved the key card in the air. “Already got one.”

“Then use it.” After delivering that command, the powerful demon turned on his heel and stalked away from us.

Interlacing our fingers, Dawson led me over to the elevators. After we stepped inside and the doors slid closed behind us, I heaved a deep sigh. “Dang, that was intense.”

Dawson’s tone was thick with passion as he murmured, “You haven’t seen intense yet, baby. But you can be damn sure I’m going to show you as soon as we’re in the privacy of our room.”

“C’mon, go faster,” I mumbled as I watched the floor numbers illuminate on the counter above the doors. Dawson’s laughter echoed in the metal enclosure, and I felt as though I’d conquered the world because I was able to draw that response out of him after what had just happened downstairs.

When the doors slid open again, I practically dragged my fated mate down the hallway toward our room. Her little chant for the elevator to move faster turned me on more than I already was, which was saying a fuck of a lot because I was already desperate for her. When we reached the door that matched the number on the key card I’d been given, I waved it in front of the lock and impatiently waited for the sensor to turn green.

As soon as the lock disengaged, I turned the knob and shoved the door open. Nudging Ember inside, I followed directly behind her and kicked the door shut.

She looked around for a moment before turning toward me. “Should we talk about the disaster that just happened down there?”

No way in hell was I going to be able to have a rational conversation until after I’d made Ember mine. She squealed as I lifted her off her feet and strode through the suite to toss her onto the king-sized mattress in the bedroom, being careful to make sure she landed in the middle so she didn’t get hurt.

“It can wait,” I assured her as I kicked off my shoes.
