The demon didn’t pay attention to the screenshot of the video that clearly showed how tightly he’d been gripping my fated mate’s arm. “Like I already said…I didn’t break any of your damn rules. Tell your men to let me go. You have no reason to keep me here against my will.”
“Yet that’s exactly what you were trying to do to Miss Brandt.”

Ember
Iknew I should be focused on the demon who ran The Abyss with an iron fist, but my attention kept shifting to the man who’d come to my aid. How could I not? My destined consort was the most gorgeous man I’d ever seen…although I might have been biased. He was tall with lean muscles that corded his body. My fingers itched to dive into his thick dark hair. I had no doubt that I could stare into his green eyes for hours on end. And my inner thighs tingled as I wondered what it would feel like to have his facial scruff scrape against my sensitive skin.
Finding my consort must have made my brain go haywire. I was in the middle of a potentially life and death situation, and here I was, daydreaming about what he could do with his mouth between my legs. I shook my head to clear the sensual fog and focused on the conversation swirling around me.
“I was just trying to talk the pretty lady into having a drink with me, that’s all.”
The demon’s story would have been a lot more believable if he hadn’t physically prevented me from walking away. A fact my consort was quick to point out. “I heard her say no, same as you. That should have been enough for you to leave her alone. But it wasn’t. You put your filthy hand on my mate and scared her badly enough that the scent of her terror filled the entire damn lobby.”
Adan let the video play again, pausing it at the moment when the demon had whispered in my ear. Then he skewered him with his angry gaze and asked, “You want to tell me what you said to her?”
“I told the little bitch that I’d buy her another shot.”
“That wasn’t…” I pressed my lips together at the glare Adan aimed at me.
“Tsk-tsk, Ozul. Didn’t I already warn you about lying to me?” Adan chided with a shake of his head.
He pressed a button on his tablet, and Ozul’s grating voice sounded. Whatever supernatural technology Adan used to monitor the premises was effective. Ozul’s words were much louder than when he’d originally said them.
“Saw you take that shot with the bastard who owns this place. You want something fiery down your throat, I can make it happen. Whether you want it to or not.”
“You better hope Adan makes you pay for what you threatened my fated mate with.” My consort’s muscles bunched with rage as he leaned toward the demon who’d accosted me. “Because if it’s left up to me, you’re a dead man.”
“Killing isn’t allowed at The Abyss.” Adan slanted a glance in my direction. “It’s my only other rule.”
Blake hadn’t needed to warn me about that one since I’d never taken anyone’s life, but it would’ve been a big help if he’d told me that I couldn’t use my magic here. “Good to know.”
Adan’s attention returned to the other demon. “But the rule doesn’t apply to me.”
I heaved a deep sigh of relief as his guards seemed to have taken his words as an order. Ozul ranted as they dragged him across the lobby and through a door in the back, directly past the bar. His screams continued to echo for another minute before they abruptly shut off, and I couldn’t help but wonder where they had taken him…and if I was next.
“If you decide you need some help with him, I’m more than willing to lend a helping hand,” my consort offered as he pulled an envelope that was similar to the one I’d given to Adan earlier. Handing it to the demon, he added, “You can get my number from Seth if you need to reach me.”
“I already have your number.” Adan’s gaze slid to me. “And hers.”
“Good, then my fated mate and I will be on our way,” he announced as he interlaced our fingers.
“Not so fast. Ember still broke one of my rules, and a price must be paid for that.” He swept his arm toward the supernatural beings around us who weren’t even trying to pretend they weren’t listening to every word we were saying.
Nothing could dim the joy of finding my consort—not even the threat of my possible impending death.
“Not from her,” my consort insisted. “She didn’t even know about the rule.”
Adan’s gaze was assessing as he considered me. “Is what Dawson says true?”
“Yes.” Although I didn’t know how Dawson was aware of that fact…unless our bond was strong enough already for him to be able to read me. On his side at least, because it was still fuzzy on mine. Or maybe I just didn’t have a very good poker face.
“I suppose I should take that into consideration, along with Ozul’s heavy-handedness with you.” Adan tucked the tablet back into his inside jacket pocket. “I need time to contemplate how I want to handle these unique circumstances. I’m afraid I must insist that you accept my offer of hospitality.”
“I’m not a fan of you insisting on anything where my mate is concerned.” Dawson tugged me against his side, making me feel safe in the shelter of his embrace. “And she’s damn well not staying here without me.”
“I’m not forcing you to leave,” Adan pointed out. “Considering you two just found each other, I am assuming you would prefer to share a room?”
