She could also team up with someone and add her family’s forces to theirs.

I raked my hands through my hair as I leaned back. I knew that killing Rosana would get rid of the threat of her aiding my enemies, but I didn’t want to stoop to that level. And not that I couldn’t take him, but I certainly didn’t want to piss her parents off. I knew they’d understand why I threw her out. After all, it was more accepted for a man to step out of his marriage here on the islands than a woman. That would play in my favor, but not for long.

And it damn sure wouldn’t keep Rosana in check.

“Fuck,” I murmured.

I also had pushback from Ronnie and Lorenzo that I knew was eventually coming. Though, I was shocked I hadn’t already heard from the man. Lorenzo, with his hot-headed ways, should’ve already come after me. So, the fact that he hadn’t already stormed my home the second he found Char missing struck me as odd. Nevertheless, there was a possibility he was planning something big.

So, I had to make sure to prepare for bigger.

“Mr. Emiliano?”

The head of my security knocked on my door and I stood. “Good. I’m glad you’re here. I want to talk about the new guard patterns--.”

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but the doctor wants you upstairs, ASAP.”

He didn’t have to tell me twice for me to start booking it. I climbed the stairs three at a time until I burst through the upstairs door that led into the apartment Char once occupied. And when I rounded into her bedroom and saw her hooked up to I.V.’s with tubes up her nose, I froze.

The doctor came to stand beside me. “I have her knocked out with some pain killers. It’s the least she deserves with the pain she’s in.”

I slowly looked over at him. “What the fuck is going on?”

He sighed. “It didn’t take long for me to realize that she had an unchecked concussion. Her brain has been swollen and pushing against her skull for at least a week. And while the concussion itself has died down, it’s created a cascade of effects she’s going to have to ride out.”

I blinked. “So, you’re telling me there’s nothing you can do for her right now?”

He shrugged. “Except make her comfortable, which I have every intention of doing. See, the cure for a concussion is rest. If it’s really bad, fluid might need to be drained off the brain. But because she didn’t get treatment for it, there’s no telling without an official scan as to how much damage was done.”

“If it makes any difference, we were having sexual relations before I called for you.”

He turned to face me. “I know it’s uncouth, but might I ask you a few questions about her movements and what you did to her? It’ll give me a great idea as to what kind of condition her brain is in.”

I was very uncomfortable with the questions he asked, especially since I was divulging intimate details of Char I wanted no one else to know. In any other situation, the man would’ve already met a fantastically bloodied fate for even asking such a thing.

But, for Char’s health, I’d do anything to make sure she was all right.

The doctor clicked his tongue. “Well, the vigorousness of the sexual activity is probably what prompted the swelling again, which means there are probably a few lesions that have to heal with time.”

“Lesions? Will she have permanent brain damage?”

“Like I said, I’ll have to get my portable machine in here to do a scan. But, I’ll be coming back tomorrow to do it. Right now, I want her to rest.”

I held out my hand. “Thank you, Doc, for coming so quickly.”

He shook it. “You made the right call. But now, it’s simply a waiting game until her body heals. And they all heal at various paces.”

I dropped his hand. “I know when she wakes up she’s going to ask if she can work. Or do something. Or get up.”

He nodded slowly. “I wouldn’t let her get up without help. If she starts feeling dizzy at all, she needs to get off her feet immediately and stay off them. I don’t see any issue with work, if her work isn’t physically vigorous.”

“She’s an attorney.”

“Ah, well in that case, she can work unless—again—she’s feeling dizzy.”

I patted his shoulder. “I’ll let her know, thank you.”

“Mr. Emiliano, I know a man of your stature doesn’t always enjoy being told what to do, but I think it’s pretty obvious that rigorous sex is out of the question until her brain can heal.”
