“Really?”

Nodding my head, “Time does a lot of wonders. Just give us time to move past it, and we’ll see where we’re at.”

Chapter 47

Aidan

Idon’t believe in coincidences, and that bitch turning up here while the others are trying to get Charlie is too suspicious for my liking.

Kelvin and I lean on the wall outside the door, listening for Autumn in case she needs any help.

“I’m surprised Ellie showed her face,” Kelvin grunts, his eyes sliding back to the door as if he’s just as anxious about leaving Autumn in there alone with her.

We have all exits blocked, and guards are posted outside the living room window in case Ellie is here to do as Charlie says again.

“How is she still alive to be able to do so?” I ask.

Kelvin slides his eyes to mine, “We don’t kill women.”

I nod my agreement, both of us lapsing into silence as we listen to Autumn and Ellie talk.

“I can’t forgive you yet. Maybe I’ll be able to in the future, but right now, I don’t have the space in my life for it,” Autumn says, shocking the shit out of me.

If I were her, I’d have slit her throat for betraying me and not even feel an ounce of guilt, but I guess that’s what makes her a better person than me.

I love her brother, and even though we’ve moved quickly, I know I want him in my life forever, by my side.

Autumn is now my family, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s a good person on top of all of that. She’s oblivious to the monsters she’s surrounded herself with, seeing only the best in us all, even when we show our darker sides.

I’ve always wanted a little sister, so taking her under my wing was no problem.

She’s fought her demons, and I can see why my brother has become infatuated with her so quickly, even though that seems to be genetic.

I hear Ellie crying, her sniffles echoing through the door, and I scowl. Does she really think that act is going to work?

I don’t care if she’s sincere. She’s not on her hands and knees begging for forgiveness, and I don’t think her meager sorry is enough.

When the door to the living room opens, a red-eyed Autumn appears, but she doesn’t let her tears flow. I give her a proud smile, which slides off my face when I glance down at the frail-looking Ellie. She looks sick, and even though I think she’s attractive, all I can see is a snake staring back at me.

“I’ll see you around, Ellie, and we can talk, ok?” Autumn says sincerely.

Ellie nods her head meekly and then slides past me towards the front door.

“I’ll see her out, Little Sis,” I say before following after Ellie, my steps eating up the distance she’s created.

I walk behind her, keeping step. Just as her hand reaches for the handle, I stop her, my hand banging against the wood, startling her.

“I don’t believe in coincidences, Ellie. I think you turning up here while they’re going after Charlie is too suspicious, and I don’t like it. So I’ll only say this once.”

Ellie stares up at me, her blue eyes wide as she takes in my words.

“Do you know who I am?” I ask her. She nods, “Good, so you know the lengths I’ll go to to protect my family, and that girl in there ismyfamily, you hear me? Come near her again, or Brenn for that matter, and I’ll fucking kill you,” I sneer down at her, “I don’t kill women, but I’ll make the exception for you.Snake.”

Ellie nods, her hand pushing on the handle, and she shuffles out, her sniffles following as she makes her way back to her car and tears out of the driveway like her life depends on it.

“Aidan?” Autumn’s small voice carries through the house from the kitchen, where Mrs. McKay is bustling around her and making her hot cocoa.

“I’m here,” I say, walking into the room and sitting next to her, “You did good. I’m proud of you for standing up for yourself.”
