“What the fuck? Put the gun down!”

He was crawling toward her when she whipped around to face him.

“Shut the fuck up, Rob! We need them and she’ll do whatever it takes to save them!”

Rob shook his head. “I know we need them! Put the gun down, babe. The plan.”

I eyed the two, figuring Tessa was the easiest to get talking.

“What do you mean you need them?”

She turned to me and laughed. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

I shrugged. “I mean, you’re gonna kill me, anyway. So tell me your grand plan. Oops, sorry, I mean Rob. We all know you can’t fucking come up with shit.”

She glared at me and stomped forward. “I ain’t fucking stupid! I came up with some of this shit too!”

“Sure you did. Run back to Rob so he can tell you what to do next. It’s really a shame you can’t even think for yourself.”

“Shut the fuck up! We’re selling those brats! Do you know how much I can get for that little bitch? She’s gonna make me the most money.”

Bile rose in my throat, and I spit it toward Tessa.

“You’re fucking sick.”

Tessa laughed. “And you’re gonna be fucking dead.”

I turned and pushed the kids. “Run! Run as far as you can!”

Beckett moved behind them, but fell to the floor as a shot rang out in the empty warehouse. Tessa ran past him after the kids, gun in hand. Beckett turned to me and opened his mouth, but before he got anything out, a searing pain burst through my skull.

I fell to the floor and looked up to see Rob standing over me with a metal bat in his hand. Blood seeped past my face as I tried to move. He kicked me over and over until finally, the black tunnel came to me and everything finally went cold and dark….

Myeyesslowlyopened, and I squinted, the pain in my head radiating through my body. I tried to reach up, but my hands were tied behind my back. Something sticky was on my face and in my hair, and I tried to look around without throwing up from the pain.

When I could finally look around, I found I was tied to Beckett in the warehouse. He was fully awake as I panicked.

“Oh fuck. Fuck! She took them! No!!!”

Beckett softly spoke. “Shhh. It’s okay. I need you to listen to me, Lily. Moose is going to find us. But we need to sit still. They rigged us together so if we try to escape, we blow up.”

“Fuck! How is Moose going to know? I rushed out and lied. I told them I was meeting with a client!”

“Trust me. He’ll know something is up. He’s got a GPS tracker on the truck, so he’ll be able to find us. Then I’ll fucking kill that cunt and her little sidekick.”

I carefully shook my head and let a few tears escape. “I love those kids like they’re my own, Beckett. I can’t lose them.”

“We’re not gonna lose them. I promise. You know why?”

“Why?”

Beckett smiled. “Cause we’re the fucking Devil’s Highwaymen and you’re the mother fucking princess of theChicos del Lado Sur.Which, by the way, you need to tell me about.”

I softly laughed. “Well. My dad’s side of the family has run it for a very long time. He was killed, and I was set to take over. Instead, I left it in the hands of my ex, who my father thought of like a son. But yeah, I was raised in one of the most notorious gangs of South Cali.”

Beckett whistled. “Well shit, girl. Moose caught himself one badass bitch.”

“Yeah, but not badass enough to save his fucking kids.”
