Nova grabbed her pad of paper and crayons and led me to the picnic table. For the rest of the afternoon, we colored while the boys played in the yard.

It was exactly the day I needed to destress from everything that was happening in my life.

Chapter Ten

Moose

Afewhourshadgone by when I saw the alarm on my phone go off. I looked down to see Wrench driving Lily’s car up the driveway with the prospect behind him.

Lily looked up and smiled when she saw Wrench park her car next to my truck. She got up and practically ran over to it.

She started to chat with Wrench, and I slowly walked toward them. Wrench leaned on the car and smiled at Lily.

Getting closer, I could hear him flirting with her.

“Well, if you like fast cars, come by the shop some time. I’ll take you out in some of the drag cars I’ve been working on.”

I stepped up behind Lily and put my hand on her back, glaring at Wrench. The prospect stifled his laugh.

Lily turned to me with the biggest smile on her face.

“Did you hear that, Moose? Drag cars! I grew up around street racing and miss it so much. Even raced in a few myself.”

I traced circles on her back as she went on and on about cars. Wrench slowly moved away from her and toward the truck. Lily was so wrapped up in her story, she didn’t even notice what was going on right in front of her.

Nova came running over and tugged on her hand. “Come play hopscotch with me, Lily!”

“That sounds so much fun!” She turned to Wrench and smiled. “Thanks for bringing my baby home! I’ll stop by sometime to see whatcha got.”

As she walked away with Nova, Wrench turned to me and arched his eyebrow.

“Wanna tell me what that was about?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He laughed. “So that wasn’t you claiming Lily? You weren’t ready to beat my ass cause I was flirting with her?”

I growled, and he just laughed some more.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought.”

Shaking my head, I leaned against my truck.

“I can’t. Lily’s got some dark demons she’s fighting with. Yeah, we could have a fucking good time, but what happens after that? What happens when she wants more? You’ve seen her. We are nothing alike.”

The prospect shrugged. “And look at Lilah and Striker, Willow and Maverick, Bambi and Goose. Those women are out of their fucking leagues. But they still landed them.”

I shook my head. “It’s not worth the heartbreak. My kids are already attached to her. I can’t confuse them more. Plus, they’re all I need in life.”

Wrench sighed. “Brother. You’re allowed to be happy too. Those kids are smart and can see when you’re down.”

“I’m happy with our life now. I don’t need anybody to complete our family. We’re complete now; just the three of us.”

Wrench shook his head. “That’s not what I meant.”

“I kissed her.”

The prospect laughed. “Fucking right, man!”
