“This is definitely not for me.”

Violet laughed as we both slid out and stretched.

“I’m glad you figured it out. It’s a lonely job more days than not.”

While she got gas, I leaned against the passenger door and kept my eyes on Landell’s location. He’d come to a stop in the middle of nowhere it seemed.

My mind wandered to Sean.

I missed him.

And it was quite clear I was not meant to be an assassin. The job was more sitting and waiting than anything.

“Blair!”

I blinked and looked over my shoulder.

“Call him,” Violet said, gaze knowing. “I’ll give you five minutes.”

Not needing to be told twice, I dialed his number.

“This my wife?” Sean asked upon answering.

I laughed and stared at the ground.

“Affirmative.”

He sighed and I immediately felt the same weight lift from my shoulders. Sometimes you just needed to hear the one voice that makes everything better, even when there’s nothing wrong.

“You safe?”

“Yes,” I murmured. “Nothing exciting this way. What about you?”

He chuckled.

“You wouldn’t believe me even if I told you.”

With only a couple minutes to talk, I decided not to use them digging into whatever that meant.

“No Ithaca?”

I smiled at the way he asked.

“No Ithaca,” I confirmed, leaving it at that. “But we’re closer to home.”

He hummed.

“I love you, beautiful goddess.”

Violent tapped her wrist as she passed to enter the gas station.

“I love you more, little deer. I have to go but I’ll be home soon.”

“How soon?” he asked, trying to keep me on the phone.

“Soon, baby. Keep a cool head until then, okay?”

He mumbled something about trying his best—sounding like his brother—before I ended the call to spare us both and swiped the screen to see Landell was heading back in this direction.
