The scent of branded flesh invaded my nose and burned my eyes. What was happening?

“You shouldn’t be with a Blackwood.” There were no emotions in his voice, and finally, he came closer, standing tall before me. His arrogance from the store completely vanished.

“And why’s that?” I asked, my nose wrinkled when the smell increased, and my eyes wandered over his shoulder, watching how the darkness behind him was filled with red glowing eyes peering back at me.

“He will kill you.” His words lured me back, and the softness in his gaze didn’t go unnoticed.

I shook my head, swallowing the lump in the back of my throat. “He will never hurt me.”

His eyes drifted to the bruise on my arm, and I clenched my jaw in response. Preparing myself for his next words.

“Why aren’t you healing?” he asked.

“I’m human,” I scoffed, crossing my arms to hide the bruise.

The confusion in his eyes made mine rise.

“What?” I asked.

I could feel it under my skin, Isaac was coming my way. It seemed the stranger felt it, too, because when I blinked, he was gone. I stood there alone with my thoughts again, confused and bewildered.

I sighed, hating all this. Why couldn’t he give me a straight answer? And why didn’t I fear him, or the ones behind him?

The smoky scent had faded, almost as if it was never here. And now, I had to turn around and meet my brooding mate who wouldn’t look at me.

His arms snaked around, and I flinched. “I’m sorry, little bird.” His warm breath danced over my skin and my entire body relaxed against him.

“You’re an ass.” The corner of my lip lifted, cherishing this moment. Remembering he would always come and get me. Just as he promised.

“Definitely, but I’m your ass.”

I chuckled and shook my head. “Don’t shut me out.”

“I know, I’m just scared of losing you.”

I gulped and turned in his soft hold. “I’m not going anywhere.”

He smiled but his eyes gave it away. I had never seen him like this before. With this fear in his eyes, one that made me shiver.

“They are closing in, aren’t they?” I whispered.

“Yes.” I glared at him, hating his short answer. But we didn’t truly speak about this out in the open, always fearing someone might overhear us.

“Want to head,” I stopped my words, knowing he would fill in the blanks.

“It’s too dangerous.”

I shrugged my shoulders. “Maybe.” I wanted to go west, visit that place the stranger spoke about. Maybe we will find it. Find the place the goddess blessed and hope the mark will stay this time.

But there was also something else. As if there was more than what the stranger said. And now with him knowing my last name, I had to find him.

Isaac grinned, and mischief filled his gaze, pulling me back from my thoughts. “You want to get rid of me so soon?”

“Never.”

“Good.” He leaned closer, his lips gently pressing against my forehead, and I leaned into his touch. Not knowing what the future might hold for us.

His body tensed slightly, and I closed my eyes. “Let’s go back, we need to know for sure.”
