But first, the moon goddess. And then, I had to figure out why the mark on Joanne’s neck kept fading.
I said I was fine, but she saw through my lies. However, as much as I wanted to focus on it, needing to have our souls intertwined, my mind kept going back to the moon goddess.
And I knew she had all the answers.
With my mind in turmoil, I peeled myself away from the wall I was leaning against and opened the bond between Joanne and me.
The pain I felt, the sadness coming from her made me whimper. I did that.
I promised to take care of her. And that meant in every way possible.
“You’re a dick,” William muttered, giving me a shove.
With a scowl on his face, he walked over to Conner, who had the same expression. They all knew. They could read it on our faces when we came back from the store, and it didn’t help when Laila found the pregnancy test stuffed in one of the bags.
“I don’t want her to die,” I mumbled, knowing all too well they could hear me.
“Maybe you should turn her,” Conner spoke, the scowl on his face slowly disappeared and something else replaced it. Pity. Fuck, I didn’t want his pity, from either of them.
William scoffed. “Yeah, that won’t kill her.”
“They used to do it all the time—” Conner said, only to be cut off by William’s aura lashing out.
“And now it’s forbidden for a reason,” William growled.
Even for a packless wolf, he was still a force. I was glad he protected her; he truly saw her as family. However, the angered expression on Laila’s face didn’t go unnoticed. Was she jealous of Joanne?
They never crossed that line, right? I would have known by now.
Then why was there an angered glint in her gaze when William showed his protective nature towards Joanne?
She tried to compose herself, and my eyes remained on her. My distrust in others crawled to the surface, and my mind edged back to what happened the day I lost my mate.
Laila’s eyes met mine, and she flinched slightly. The fear that wafted off her didn’t match how she tilted her head in defiance, and it only made Logan growl at the disrespect.
“You’re not an Alpha anymore,” she spat.
Silence fell around me, and William stood between us in a matter of seconds, giving a warning glare at Laila before turning to me.
“It’s okay,” I rumbled, reining back my rising anger while my eyes roamed to her big belly. “And I won’t turn Joanne.”
William nodded, and Conner held his tongue. I wanted him to speak up, though, he should show more of himself.
When Joanne was near, he was a different person, having enough balls to taunt me. However, when she wasn’t, he remained quiet.
Still, after everything, he wouldn’t trust me. Trust me enough, I won’t kill him. Or was it something else?
Logan stirred inside me, sensing Joanne moving too far from us. “I’m going after my mate.”
I didn’t wait for a response and let the bond lead me while my mind wandered about all that had happened. Like it did almost every day.
Hoping to find something I had missed.
-Joanne-
The stranger’s steps were with caution, and the only sound I heard was the scrunch of the leaves and branches being crushed under his boots. That was until he said, “Monroe.”
My brows pinched together. Why was he using my last name? “How do you know my name?”
