“We have to go,” he said, his posture showing how ready he was to fight, to protect us all.

Grabbing my backpack, I took Joanne’s hand. “Show us, little bird.”

She smiled shyly, and it warmed my heart.

We followed behind her, sprinting through the forest. We hid our scents, hoping that it gave us some more time, but Joanne couldn’t hide her scent.

When she told us we needed to go left, we went right, taking a detour. It drove her mad, but we had to for our followers. We had to make it somewhat harder for them, never moving in a straight line, running in circles, all to drive them crazy. Hoping it would buy us enough time.

Because there was a possibility that once we arrived, we would find nothing.

The smell of ashes surrounded us and a path showed itself beneath our feet. The trees shielded us from our sides, giving us only one way to move.

“This way,” Joanne whispered, tugging me forward.

Every sound around me heightened, the crunch of the ground beneath me, the paws hitting the dirt in the distance, the heavy pants of Laila, the heartbeat of Joanne.

Snarls, growls, were closing in.

The trail ended and the burned scent had disappeared. Peeling her fingers away from mine, she searched. Her heart beat rising, fear flowing through the bond.

“This is the place,” she mumbled more to herself than us.

William and Laila were shifting on their feet when the sound of snarls came closer.

“How many?” I looked at Conner, and he gulped.

“Too many.” He sighed in defeat.

“Stay with her,” I ordered, edging toward the sound of paws.

Closing my eyes, feeling the blood that ran through my veins, the ice within. I pulled it forward, let it move through my skin, covering me as a thick layer of smoke, expanding, circling.

“Isaac?!” Joanne yelled, and I heard Conner telling her to stay back.

I opened my eyes, my vision emerged in a blue hue, and I glanced over my shoulder. “Find it, little bird.”

“I’m not leaving you!” She thrashed in Conner’s strong hold.

“Remember what I promised.” I knew she would get my words. I would follow her to the end of the world, and I didn’t intend on dying today.

I had to reclaim a part of myself, a part I kept hidden, a part Liam took from me.

Wolves jumped towards me, and I unleashed all I had to give. The ice expanded, claiming their lives.

I never used it like this before, never dared to. However, I didn’t have a choice. I had to pull on the deepest parts of myself, summoning all I had.

“Let’s have some fun, Logan.”

“Finally,” he said with a grin.

A wicked smile formed on my lips, and I lunged for the next wolf.

This fight would be different, this fight I wouldn’t lose. I held myself back that day, the day I died. Not daring to give a glimpse of what I used for those camps I murdered. I feared they would capture me, put me in some lab to run all sorts of tests on.

I knew better, I knew which stories were fairy tales and which were the truths.

I was the ice and Joanne was my fire. We were destined to claim the throne, to rule the supernatural world.
