She gulped, a slight tremble moved through her body and the warmth of her touch gradually disappeared.

“I need to remember what my father wanted me to do.”

Doubt showed itself in her eyes and my arms tightened around her, waiting for her to tell me everything. All that haunted her mind.

With a shaky breath, trying to control the sadness I felt coming through the bond when she spoke of her father. I listened closely.

She told me about the path her father showed her the last time she was here, after her eighteenth birthday. That was the first time she was allowed to come with. And I knew exactly where we were going next.

I had an inkling that that path led to the pack ground. This pack wasn’t like any other, working closely with witches. Hiding in the shadow.

And now it was time to find the truth. Maybe they would prove a worthy ally in this fight with Gregory and Liam.

We had to try at least. The Board would get here within hours. We couldn’t stay here any longer. We had to do something.

The Board.

My brows knitted together. “How did they find us?” I mumbled and Joanne mirrored my expression.

“Emlyn?”

I found it hard to believe he was behind it. It was too easy to put it on him. My paranoia rose, and I hated that my thoughts brought me back to my friends, our friends.

Conner was still mated to Elisa. Maybe he contacted her. I shook my head, he wouldn’t, but the mate bond was a powerful thing.

There was nothing to win for William, other than safety or an Alpha position.

Laila, would she betray us?

“Laila?” I asked and Joanne shook her head with a sigh.

“Don’t go there, they won’t betray us. They are our family now.”

She was right, but I couldn’t ignore this feeling deep inside me, nagging, whispering that there was more.

“Wolves spotted!” Conner shouted, and Joanne quickly crawled off my lap.

There were no words needed, both getting dressed as quickly as possible and with a sharp whistle, I let the others know it was safe to come back.

William wouldn’t look at me and Conner nodded with a grin plastered on his face.

He wouldn’t betray me, he was more than my Beta, he was my brother.

I had no idea what came over me, maybe Joanne’s love had made me a softie, but my legs moved on their own until I stopped in front of Conner.

His body froze as I pulled him into a hug. “Speak up when I don’t listen,” I whispered.

He hesitantly patted my back, and I stepped back, keeping him at arm’s length. “And don’t you dare to go away with Joanne again on her mysterious field trips.”

With a shrug, he glanced at her. “Don’t make me choose a side between my Alpha and Luna.”

I groaned, eager to slap the back of his head. “Don’t be a kiss ass, Conner.”

He chuckled and Joanne joined in with her sweet laughter. It was a blissful moment, making me forget about all the struggles we had and were yet to come.

I watched them, joking around, laughing as they packed up everything. Logan stirred, and I knew the wolves were closing in.

The air around me changed, carrying their scents. My jaw clenched and my eyes found William.
