“Why? Why can’t we leave this to Nate and help him that way?” I say, desperately hoping I can reason with her.
“And if we do that then he’ll charge in there and it will be the first time he will have ever laid his hands on a woman in that way because he’s past the point of patience with that bitch, and then all hell will break loose. He would never forgive himself for killing a female. It goes against everything he stands for.”
“He might not,” I argue back pathetically, and she quirks one eyebrow at me. “Yeah, okay, he would probably do that, but he’d take a shitload of back up with him.”
“Yes, he would, but I’ve got back up ready and waiting, so we don’t need to worry about that,” she says, flooring me again.
“Who? How? When?”
She chuckles. “Don’t worry about that. Just know that there are some badass MC’s that owe me a favour or three, so I called it in, and they’ll meet us a few miles back from The Lodge.”
Well. Fuck.
“Now are you in?” she asks.
Am I in?
Am I going to deceive my husband by not telling him? I mean, technically, I can’t because Zoey has my phone, but still… it doesn’t feel right.
“I don’t like him not knowing,” I tell her, and her eyes soften despite what we are about to do.
“Is that a yes?”
I sigh. “It’s a yes.”
“I knew you wouldn’t let me down,” she says with a smile, and I try to return it, but I feel shitty. “You and me, we’re gonna be best mates, Kat, I just know it.”
I have to laugh, because honestly, I can see it too, no matter how crazy she may be at times.
“Now, come on,” she says as she goes back to the driver’s side of the car and gets in. I sink into the passenger seat and shut the door, and then we’re off, speeding away and towards what could be the biggest mistake of our lives.
“We’ve got this,” she says, and I turn my head to look at her. She’s determined, and she would do anything for Nate, same as I would.
We’re doing this to blindside Jessica, and to save Nate from himself.
“We’ve got this,” I say, and Zoey smiles. “Now, you best tell me what you were going to say earlier, before we got interrupted.”
“Damn, I was hoping you would have forgotten about that,” she says, and I laugh.
“Ha ha, you wish. Now spill.”
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Nate
Fucking hell, I’m about to blow a gasket.
I’ve been ringing Kat and Zoey’s phones non-stop for the last fifteen minutes, and neither of them have answered. I knew I shouldn’t have left them alone together. Fucking dangerous.
“Find them,” I bark to the four men in my office. They quickly move and leave, knowing that I am so close to losing my shit.
I knew I should have fitted Zoey’s car with a fucking tracker. Damn me for trying to have some sort of morals.
I run my hands through my hair and grip as the phone call once again goes to voicemail.
I march from my office and down the stairs, grabbing my car keys from the hook by the door and I make my way outside and to my car. I can’t just sit here, I need to drive, keep my eyes peeled for any goddamn sign of my sister and my wife.
I get in the car and am about to start it when my phone buzzes in my hand.
