“What is that?” she asked.
They were at his house. “Hang on,” he said and left her in the living room, then returned with a painting. She could only see the back, but he flipped it around.
“Stormy Night,” she said. “How did you get that?”
“I bought it when I realized it was part of your LA showing. I had a panic moment that someone else was going to get it. I had no idea you shipped it out.”
“It was a last minute addition. I can’t believe you bought it. Why?”
“Because this work started it all. You finished, then danced your way right into my life.”
Talk about super sweet. “Carson,” she said, her voice singsonging. “I would have given it to you.”
“Nope,” he said. “It’s better this way. Hang on, there is more.” He pulled his phone out and she had no idea what he was doing, then he put it away. “Check my list now.”
She looked at her iPad and her jaw dropped.
“Noooooo,” she said, dragging the word out in shock.
He got down on his knee and pulled out the diamond ring. “I had this made the minute I found out you were pregnant. I just had to wait for the right time. It’s now. Let’s end this year one way and start it another. New Year’s Eve engagement sounds right, don’t you think?”
“Well,” she said, her eyes filling. “It is on your list and since I hope I’m the only woman you propose to, we need to do it now. I don’t want to wait another year.”
He grabbed her hand, slipped the ring on and said, “Laine Connors, VIP member of the Idiot Club, will you be my wife? Will you help me raise these two wild kids we are going to have and make room for a few more?”
“Yes,” she said. “I will. As long as they aren’t members of that club and only their mother is.”
He gave her a light kiss on the cheek. “I want our kids to have the same outlook on life as you and if that makes them VIP members, then so be it. They’ll be happier for it.”
“They will,” she said. “Because happiness is it all. Live for today.”
