Page 56 of The Lies That Shatter

I expect her to lead me to the main front door, but she doesn’t. Instead, she pulls me through the back, towards her father’s rooms. It’s not until I’m standing face to face with my girl that I realise what Mel’s doing. She dragged me all the wayto the back door, so she could make me do the walk of shame in front of McKenna and Aleandro.

I grind my teeth as I try to keep the irritation off my face. McKenna smiles, like the sight of me looking rumbled from sleeping in a bed with another woman doesn’t bother her. “Morning,” she says brightly, even going as far as to wave at us.

Mel looks stunned. “You’re in a good mood this morning.”

“Yeah, I just got off the phone with Ethan. We have a date planned for tonight, and I’m a little excited,” she adds, her eyes lighting up with a humour that makes me want to spank her ass all over again…only this time as a punishment.

“Oh, well…I’m going to see Finn out,” Mel snaps, completely ignoring McKenna’s conversation.

“No problem. I’m going to get your dad sorted for the day before I leave at lunch. You have the afternoon planned with him, don’t you?”

Mel waves her hand, dismissing McKenna in a way that makes my blood boil. “Yes, you know we have an appointment. Get back to work.”

She doesn’t wait for McKenna to reply, and instead pulls me towards the back door. The hand she’s not holding is balled into a fist, and I have to bite my lip to stop the anger from bubbling over. When this is over, I’m gonna make sure she never speaks to my girl like that again.

Once we’re at the door, Mel leans in to kiss me, but I divert and press my lips to her cheek, cutting her off before she gets a chance to speak. “Thanks for a lovely evening, Mel. I have to run so I’m not late, but I will text you and we can arrange to do this again. No wine next time, so it doesn’t hurt my ego when you can’t remember.”

Her eyes widen at my statement, and she shakes her head. “I didn’t mean I can’t remember everything, just bits. I know Ihad fun, and you have nothing to worry about. I want to do this again…soon!”

I have to fight back the laugh as she lies to cover for herself. With a swift goodbye, I rush to my car. I quickly grab my phone and type a text to McKenna before hitting send as I start to drive away.

FINN

For that mention of Ethan, I’m gonna spank you so hard your ass will have my hand prints on it for a week. I will be over tonight.

It doesn’t take long for her to respond, and I read it with a chuckle as I wait for the Whitlock gates to open.

MAC

Maybe I was a bad girl because I want you to spank me? Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

Fuck, my cock is going to be hard all day as I think of ways to punish my bad girl.

Ican’t hide the smile on my face as I read Finn’s message. It helps the anger simmering under the surface to dissipate. I know logically that he didn’t fuck Mel, but the way she was showing him off like a prize grated on my last nerve. I could see the way she looked at me, trying to make me jealous, which is even more insane given she thinks I’m with Ethan. But when you’re insecure and think of someone as a threat, it’s hard to behave logically.

I know all about behaving logically. The sex we had in her bed, with her passed out in the other room, is what Finn used to pass off as their first night together. I should take great fucking pleasure in that. I did while he was fucking me, but then I had to leave, knowing he was going to spin his web of lies to her.

I’m guessing by the way she peacocked in here this morning, despite looking like she’d been pulled through a hedge backwards, she believed his lies…and that just made me more annoyed. Which I know is illogical, as I should be happy we were so convincing.

When Finn texts me, letting me know he plans to punish me for using Ethan in my lies, my insides tremble. Let’s be honest, all thoughts of Finn and what he wants to do to me gets me wet, but the idea of him spanking me is all consuming. I didn’t think I’d be into that sort of thing, but I’m fast learning that with Finn, I want it all.

Mel walks back into the room, and I quickly shove my phone into my pocket, so as to not arouse too much suspicion, but I obviously didn’t hide the smile on my face enough as Mel narrows her gaze at me. “I don’t pay you to stand around here grinning like a Cheshire cat.”

Her voice is as cold as her gaze, but I don’t let her get to me, making sure to keep my voice even and friendly. “I’d say sorry, but you can’t possibly be annoyed at me for being in a good mood.”

Her lip turns to a sneer as she directs her cold tone at me. “I can do whatever I want. I have just had the best night…as I’m sure you saw…and I don’t want your frivolous attitude to pull me down.”

The way she talks about my Finn feels like a knife to my gut, but I know I still have a role to play, and we need her to believe the lies. Sadly, I can’t help the sarcastic comment that slips out. “I don’t know about you, but when I’ve had an amazing night of sex, I’m usually in a much better mood than you are. My…boyfriend never leaves me unsatisfied.” It takes every ounce of willpower not to say Finn’s name, changing it to‘boyfriend’at the last minute.

Hearing the title, which is something we’ve yet to discuss, does strange things to the fluttering in my lower abdomen. I’ve never really had a proper boyfriend, but it just feels natural to assign the title to Finn. It’s probably too early for labels, but then again, this thing between us has been simmering in the background for years, so maybe it’s not too soon.

My comment has the desired effect, and Mel’s face crinkles in disgust. “I do not wish to discuss my sex life with you, and I certainly do not care to hear about yours. But let me set the record straight. Finn more than meets all of my needs, and we plan to enjoy lots more nights together.”

I take a deep breath as I try to keep the stupid fake smile on my face, attempting to show that her words aren’t getting to me, despite my strong urge to punch the stuck-up bitch. “I’m happy for you,” I say through gritted teeth.

Mel shakes her head in disgust. “I’m going back to bed. Go to the main kitchen and get me a smoothie. The chef should have left one in the fridge. Bring it to my room,” she snaps, and just as I’m about to argue, she cuts me off. “Don’t even think about arguing. No other staff members are in yet, and I am not walking around the house like this. For once, just do as you’re told.”

Without even giving me the chance to respond, she storms off toward her bedroom, her flowy robe trailing along behind her. No matter how ineffective and petty it is, I still throw her a wanker sign as she walks away, and I’m a little sad she didn’t see it.
