“Yep. No questions. You’re pregnant and it knows what you need. What the baby needs.”
“This could work.” She wrinkled her nose, as her mind put this puzzle together. “I ate about half of that sauerkraut and now I don’t want it anymore.” She smiled. “I can only hope my body gets its fill of Harker just as quickly.”
“Sure. Right.” Ellie gave her a disbelieving look.
Alison ignored her friend. Yesterday, she didn’t want to be near the man. This lust for him couldn’t last too long. Sperm was high in protein. Maybe her body just needed to absorb more of his sperm and then she’d be done with him just like that jar of sauerkraut.
CHAPTER 16: Harker
Harker paced in the living room. He was ready to send out the police or SWAT. Alison wasn't answering his phone calls or his texts. Okay. She had texted him-I’m fine-but that didn’t prove anything. A kidnapper could easily text that.
He tried calling Ellie again, but she didn’t answer either. Damn it. Alison had better be over there. He had one option left before he went looking for her. He dialed Adrian.
“Harker,” said Adrian. “I can’t say a word. Do you know how much trouble I got in because you charged into the Club like Attila the Hun? Ellie blamed me.”
“Just tell me that Alison is okay.” That’s all he wanted to know.
“She's fine.”
He breathed deeply for the first time since he’d realized that she wasn’t in the house. “So you saw her?” Okay. Maybe he needed a bit more information.
“You're killing me,” grumbled Adrian.
“You’d want me to tell you if Ellie were over here.”
“Ellie wouldn't be hiding from me because I’d never threaten to take her kid from her. Why the hell would you do something like that?”
“I’m not going to do that. I’d never do that to Alison or our child.” He knew what it was like not to have a mother in his life.
“Was it in the contract? Alison’s a lot of things but she’s not a liar.”
“It doesn’t matter if it were in the contract. I’d never do it.”
“Then why did you put it in there?”
“Fuck off.” He didn’t have to explain himself to Adrian.
“Fuck you. You’re the one who keeps calling me because you’re screwing up your relationship. Next time, call someone else.” Adrian hung up.
Harker grabbed his keys. She was with Ellie. Adrian was a dick, but he wouldn’t have said she was fine if he hadn’t seen her. Now, all he had to do was find them. It was a little early for the Club. He’d start at Ellie’s place. If Alison wasn’t there, he’d try somewhere else and when he found her, he was going to drag her home again, no matter how mad she got. Hell, she couldn’t get any angrier with him, not if she’d sneak away when he was making her dinner.
The soft hum of the garage door opening drifted through the house. She was home. His fear disappeared, all that energy becoming cold, calm anger. He dropped his keys and waited.
Alison walked into the living room. Her face was slightly flushed, and her eyes were a little red. It looked as if she’d rubbed them or she’d been crying, but other than that, she looked good. Fine. Not hurt.
“Why didn’t you answer my calls?” He wanted to throttle her for making him worry.
“Because I didn't want to talk to you.”
“I was fucking worried about you.” He stuffed his rage into a tiny compartment. Screaming at her wouldn’t help.
“I texted that I was fine.”
“That text could’ve been sent by anyone.”
“Anyone? With my phone?”
“Yeah, Alison. Kidnappers take people’s phones.”
