Chapter Three

Abigail

It had been over a week since Sienna’s wedding, and I still couldn’t get my mind off of the guy that had been watching me the whole day. He was absolutely gorgeous. Yes, he was more rugged than the guys I usually dated, but that was what attracted me to him. I was bored with the elite set. I wanted a real man. One that would love and protect me with his life.

I wanted to ask Sienna about him, but I didn’t want the issues that came with it. Now that she had Jayden, she felt all her friends needed to be with someone. She had tried to match Amanda up with one of Jayden’s colleagues, but he wasn’t interested, and in fairness, he wasn’t the type that Amanda was interested in anyway. Part of me wondered if he was the guy, but I was too afraid to ask. I hoped that he would come over and speak to me, but he just stood on the sidelines keeping to himself. I had seen Kelsey and her fiancé talking to him a few times, but apart from that, he just kept out of the way. It was obvious to me that he was uncomfortable with a society wedding.

I suspected the string of guys that kept trying to chat me up all evening didn’t help. I couldn’t believe the gall of some of them. They had attended the wedding with their girlfriends, fiancées, or wives, but still, they tried to hit it off with the famous Lila Goddard. That was always the issue. I was recognised around the world, and if one person knew who I was at that kind of shindig, the whole room knew. It didn’t matter, though. That kind of guy would never want to go out with the likes of me. He probably had some amazingly beautiful blonde women at home waiting for him. He seemed like the type of guy that would love a blonde. I saw the way he looked at Kelsey with adoration in his eyes. There was a story there, I could tell, but it was one I would never find out.

One good thing over the past week was all had been quiet on my secret admirer front. I had done two photoshoots the past week, and no one or nothing had turned up while I was there. I was starting to hope that he had finally given up and that would be the last of it. That would also mean I wouldn’t have to contact Jayden about it. I really liked him, but the thought of having a complete stranger with me twenty-four hours a day unnerved me. I know Sienna was only looking out for me, and for her, everything had turned out well, but I wasn’t so sure that it would for me.

I had arrived at the Robinson Starlight Agency just over an hour ago and was currently sitting in the office with Josephine Robinson, the owner of the agency, and my PA, Bianca Emerson. We had been discussing Sienna’s wedding, as this was the first time I had made it into the office since it happened. Jo knew Lady Wilson quite well, as she always helped to run any of the fashion shows that she held to raise money for her charity. But she didn’t know Sienna that well.

“Anyway, enough about the social event of the year. How is your boyfriend, Bianca? Gary, isn’t it? I haven’t heard you mention him for a while.”

I saw a look come over Bianca’s face, one that I had never seen before. If I hadn’t known better, I would have said that she was absolutely furious at the mention of his name. I almost wanted to take everything back as soon as I saw it, but she quickly covered it with a sad smile.

“I thought I told you. We broke up. He was obsessed with another woman, and I couldn’t handle it any longer. I told him to get out of the house.”

“Bianca, I’m so sorry. I thought he was it for you. You seemed so happy together.”

“It’s fine, Abigail. I will have the last laugh in the end, when he comes crawling back on his knees to me.”

I laughed along with her, but there was something about the tone of her voice. There was vindictiveness to it. Whatever she had planned for Gary wasn’t good, and I just hoped that I wasn’t around to see it. Because, as they say, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and from the looks of Bianca, she was definitely scorned.

It was Jo who spoke next, breaking the awkward silence. “How are you anyway, Abigail? Things have been quiet the past week, haven’t they?”

“If you mean from my secret admirer, then yes, they have. I think he has finally gotten the message and given up. Sienna had suggested that I speak to her husband, Jayden, perhaps get a bodyguard in to keep an eye out for me, but I don’t think I need to worry about that anymore.”

“Well, just promise me you won’t take any chances. You might be my best model for the agency, but I also see you as the daughter I never had. I know it’s been hard for you growing up with just you and your sister, but I have always looked out for you. I wouldn’t want anything to happen to you. Especially after the whole thing in Paris last year.”

I had wanted to forget that day and hated when Jo reminded me of it. Bianca had left the room, and not five minutes later, I found some man walking in and locking the door behind me, declaring his undying love for me and saying that he was going to marry me and wouldn’t take no for an answer. If it hadn’t been for Bianca’s quick thinking, along with the two burly security guards that broke down the door and carted him off, I didn’t know what would have happened to me.

“Thanks for reminding me, Jo. If things get out of hand again, I promise I will do something about it.”

“Thank you, Abigail.”

Just as she said that, there was a knock at the door.

“Come in.”

Jo’s PA walked into the room with a box in her hands.

“I have a parcel here for you, Lila.”

Only Bianca and Jo here knew my real name. Outside of the office, everyone called me Lila, including Jo and Bianca. We had agreed that my personal life would stay personal, like many of the models who worked for the agency.

“What have you ordered now?”

I was perplexed. I hadn’t ordered anything, so had no idea what it was.

“I haven’t ordered anything recently.”

I opened the box and found a note with something wrapped in tissue paper. I opened the tissue paper and found what could only be described as a slip of red fabric that was meant to be some kind of lingerie. It wasn’t something I would be seen dead wearing. I opened the note, gasped, and dropped it as soon as I started to read.

“Abigail, what is it?”

I sat there as Jo picked up the note and read it out loud.
