“I’m sorry, but I had to put the sedatives in the water. It took a lot of work to inject it in there so it wouldn’t be noticed by your bodyguard there. It’s ironic, really. He told you not to eat the food, I bet. But that hadn’t been drugged. If you had eaten, but not drank, you would have been fine.”

I was struggling to grasp the reality around me. The dizziness I was feeling was taking a hold of me. I tried to get up from the ground, but collapsed back down again. The one thing I couldn’t understand throughout all of this was, why? Why had Bianca gone to all this trouble? What had I ever done to upset her?

“Bianca, why are you doing this? What have I ever done to you? Haven’t I always treated you well?”

She let out a scornful laugh as she walked over to me and looked down with a smirk on her face. She started to shake her head at me. I couldn’t understand what I had done to wrong her. How I deserved to be treated in this way.

“My dear Abigail. Don’t you realise by now? You took the only man I ever loved away from me. Do you know how that feels? No, of course you don’t, because you can have any man you want, including someone else’s. Gary was mine until he realised who I worked for. Then all he wanted was to get to you. He was obsessed and never stopped speaking about you. He wouldn’t sleep with me. Didn’t want me at all. I can never forgive you for that.”

I looked up at her, still struggling to focus on her. I felt my heartrate slowing down as it would just before you fell asleep. I needed to try to stay awake. Needed to keep her talking. I knew Mateus would be able to track me because of the outfit I was wearing. I just needed to hold her up enough so that he could get to me. Taking a deep breath to calm my nerves, I continued to keep her talking.

“But you left Gary. That was your decision, not mine. If he’d come to me, I would have told him to go away. I wasn’t interested in him. Up until Kye, I wasn’t really interested in anyone. It’s not my fault that men make a beeline for me. I don’t ask them to do it. Most of them just see me as a meal ticket or a push-up for their own modelling careers. They use me. You know how that feels if Gary was just trying to get to me. You know how it feels to be used. I know that feeling too, but I don’t lash out to get revenge. I just rise above it. I’ve always been there for you, Bianca. You only had to say something, and I would have told Gary to back off, that he never had a hope in hell’s chance of going out with me—”

I didn’t get a chance to say any more before I received a slap on the face. I wasn’t sure what hurt more: the stinging sensation across my cheek, or the fact that it had come from the woman I trusted as my personal assistant. The woman who had been with me from the beginning.

“I never left Gary. He dumped me as soon as he realised that he was never going to get to you. He dumped me like a used condom in the bin and fucked off to live his life. While I had to be reminded every day of the reason I was alone. YOU! So now you are going to pay for what you have taken from me.”

The longer I sat here, the more lethargic I was feeling. My whole body felt heavy and even moving my head slightly had become a task in itself. I was struggling to stay awake, my body slowly shutting down, but I had to stall her for as long as possible.

“What do you plan to do to me? Kill me?”

The sadistic laugh that came from her lips sent chills down my spine.

“Oh, now, my dear Abigail. The great Lila Goddard is worth far more alive than dead. Do you know how many men were willing to pay to have you as theirs? Believe me, the bids were coming in from all over the world. You are worth millions to me. Well, ten million to be precise. There are men out there that want to use you as a piece of eye candy, along with producing them an heir. I’m not sure how well they will treat you, and to be honest, I couldn’t care less. It was just a shame that you weren’t blonde with blue eyes, because then I would have made a shit tonne more money out of you. But as it is, a nice Arab sheik in Qatar was very pleased to pay me ten million to have you as his. Well, one of many, I suspect. I have a private plane waiting for us both to take us to Qatar via Marrakech. When we arrive at the private air strip just outside of Doha, I will be paid, and you will be whisked off for your new life.”

Why the hell did she think I would even agree to this? Did she really think I would just sit down and take a life of being married to some sheik who I didn’t even love? Let alone sleep with him and have his children?

“You think I’m going to agree to this, Bianca? How on earth do you think I am going to be kept against my will?”

I tried to get up again, but my legs just kept giving out on me. The lethargy I was feeling was taking hold and I could feel my eyes getting heavy from the drugs that were coursing through my body.

“Oh, I’m sure he will have plenty of ways of getting you to comply. After all, I have given him all the details of your little sister, Christine, and her fiancé, Lucas. I’m sure you wouldn’t want anything to happen to them, now, would you?”

“You bitch—”

I went to punch Bianca, but fell flat on my face. I couldn’t fight it any longer. The darkness was descending around me. The last thing I saw as my eyes closed was Bianca standing above me, laughing down at me. Then nothing but blackness.
