I looked over at a stern-looking Kye staring at his brother, as Mateus sat there laughing at the pair of us.
“I’m sorry, Abigail. You are just too easy to embarrass. I promise I won’t say anything else to you about anything that happened between the two of you last night. I’m just pleased to see both of you happy together, that’s all. I did actually want to speak to you both. One of my contacts came back to me last night. He thinks he has a lead on who could be behind this. Did Jayden or Mason come back to you about Gary Smith?”
Kye placed breakfast in front of us both and sat down next to me before he spoke. “They spoke to him, and he did admit that he was infatuated with Abigail – well, Lila. He did try to use Bianca to get to Lila, but after a while he realised that he didn’t want either of them and split up with Bianca. He is married now, with a child on the way. I don’t think he had anything to do with it.”
I sat there for a moment and considered what Kye had just said. That was the exact opposite of what Bianca had told us.
“That’s not what Bianca said, though. She told me – well, us both – that she dumped Gary because she couldn’t deal with his obsession with the other woman.”
I looked over and saw both men considering what I had just said. It was true that we had now heard two separate things about the same situation, but which one was the truth? It was Mateus that spoke first.
“Well, only one of them can be telling the truth. From what my contact has found out, it doesn’t appear that Gary has purchased any of the items that have been sent to you. In fact, he has hardly spent any money at all over the past few months. I don’t think he is the one we are looking for.”
Was he really saying that Bianca, the person I had trusted as my PA for years, could be behind all of this?
“You don’t mean…”
“Mateus isn’t suggesting that Bianca is behind this, Bonita. Well, at least I don’t think he is?”
I saw them exchange a glance between them. I was starting to think that was exactly what Mateus was suggesting, but neither of them wanted to admit it. She couldn’t have been behind it, though. I had seen how worried she was for me when some of the items had shown up.
“Let’s not jump to any conclusions. I’m not suggesting Bianca is behind it. Neither Kye nor I have found any evidence to suggest that she is. We just have to check out everything. There is one thing I wanted to ask, though. Do you have the outfit you were going to wear tomorrow? If you don’t mind, I would like to put a tracker on it, along with on your phone. I just want to make sure if the worst-case scenario happens, we are at least prepared.”
I gave them both a small, but worried smile and felt my hand squeezed by Kye as he smiled back at me.
“Don’t worry, Bonita. It’s just in case. We’re not suggesting it is going to happen. Just want to be sure we can find you easily if it does. Leave the outfit with me. Mateus and I will attach the trackers later.”
I still wasn’t convinced. The pair of them knew something they weren’t telling me. I was positive about it. Before I could argue with them, Mateus spoke again.
“Thanks, Kye. Anyway, I’m going to head off and speak to Mason before I go and get some sleep.”
Without another word, Mateus got up from his seat and headed out and back to the cottage.
