Chapter Fifteen
Abigail
Iheard raised voices as I awoke from my slumber. How long had I been asleep? Feeling a weight around me, I opened my eyes and realised that I was in Kye’s arms. I had never felt safer than I did right then. Meeting his eyes as he looked down at me, I smiled as I looked at his gorgeous face. That was until the realisation of the events of this morning came back with a vengeance and I tensed in his arms as panic took over again.
“It’s fine, Bonita. I’m here. You’re safe.”
I allowed the sound of his voice to wash over me, taking away the panic I had been feeling. It was only then I realised that I had been lying on him, asleep, for I didn’t know how long. A wave of guilt suddenly came over me and I tried to get up off of him.
“Kye, I’m so sorry I fell asleep. You should have…”
I struggled to get up as he pulled me back into his side and placed his finger on my lips to stop me from speaking.
“It’s fine, Abigail. You needed it, obviously. Now, before you say anything else, let me introduce you to my brother, Mateus.”
I hadn’t realised that there was anyone else in the room, but thinking about it, with the raised voices, it made sense. I couldn’t see Kye having an argument with himself. I felt myself start to blush because one, I hadn’t realised there was anyone else in the room, and two, I was lying here in quite a compromising position with Kye’s brother watching. Gingerly, I looked up and saw an older version of Kye smiling down at me.
“Lovely to meet you, Abigail. I assume you prefer that to Lila?”
I got up from Kye’s arms and sat up and held my hand out to shake Mateus’s.
“Nice to meet you, Mateus. And yes, I do prefer Abigail to Lila. I only use that when I am on a photoshoot or at a function.”
Mateus took my hand, and instead of shaking it, he brought it up to his lips and gave me a kiss on my knuckles. From where I was sitting, I could feel Kye tense next to me. Was he jealous of his brother’s affection towards me? I looked up at Mateus and realised he must have noticed it too, as a smirk had come across his face and he gave me a quick wink. Immediately I was pulled back into Kye’s side. I almost laughed at his possessiveness. He wouldn’t admit he had feelings for me, but the way he was acting, you would have thought I was already his. The smirk was still on Mateus’s face as he let go of my hand. He was doing this on purpose and obviously knew something I didn’t.
“How long have you been here? I’m sorry I wasn’t awake to greet you.”
Mateus settled back in his chair and smiled. “Only about an hour, and don’t worry about being asleep. I totally understand after the morning you’ve had. Ricardo – sorry, Kye – explained everything.”
Again, I felt Kye stiffen next to me. So, Kye wasn’t his real name. Mateus and I needed to chat, and alone, without Kye around. But I was getting the feeling that would be more difficult than I thought. Especially with how possessive Kye was currently being. I had an idea, but wasn’t sure if Kye would go for it.
“Why don’t you go and grab a shower? I’m sure you want one after your run. I kind of put pay to that this morning. I can make us all lunch instead of breakfast, and we can all sit down and have a good natter.”
I saw Kye and his brother exchange glances, the sort that said in no uncertain terms Mateus wasn’t to say a word to me. I hoped to be able to convince him otherwise. Kye gave me a quick squeeze before he spoke.
“Will you be okay, Bonita? I don’t want you to feel frightened again.”
I leaned into him. I was enjoying this physical connection too much, and as much as I didn’t want to lose it, I needed to get answers to all my questions. And the only way I was going to do that was by speaking to Mateus.
“I have Mateus here now. I’m sure I can trust him to protect me as much as you. Go on. I will be fine.”
He hesitated again slightly, then shocked the hell out of me and pressing a kiss on my head before getting up and heading out to his bedroom.
Turning to Mateus, I spoke. “I see you haven’t been offered a coffee by your brother. Come on, I will make you one.”
Mateus followed me out to the kitchen and sat down as I made both of us a coffee. I knew that Kye would be a while, so I would make him one when he came back, along with lunch. I sat down at the island across from Mateus. I had so many questions, but didn’t know where or how to start. Mateus obviously realised why I had suggested we spend some time together alone and spoke.
“What do you want to know, Abigail?”
“Where do I start?”
I sat and pondered for a while. I guessed I just wanted to know what happened most of all. What had made Kye leave everything behind? I didn’t get a moment to ask before Mateus shocked the hell out of me.
“You know he loves you, don’t you?”
“I wish he did. He runs so hot and cold all the time. One moment, I feel as though I am getting through his walls, and then the next, they are back, stronger than ever. I will admit to liking the jealous side of him that seems to have appeared since you arrived.”
Mateus sat there and started to laugh. I couldn’t understand what was so funny, and he obviously realised that when he looked at my perplexed face.
