Page 31 of Abigail's King
Chapter Fourteen
Kye
I’d had my first peaceful night’s sleep in a long time last night. I woke up entirely refreshed and ready for the day, so I decided to go out for a run. I left a note for Abigail and went running along the beach as I used to when I was younger. As I headed back towards my house, I saw a car driving away. I knew my brother would have just hired one, so I was a little confused as to why there would be a car leaving my property. I opened the door and went to go and see if Abigail was already up. When I walked into the kitchen, I was not prepared for the sight I saw.
Abigail was crumpled on the floor with tears flowing down her face, and when I looked at the counter, I understood why. He had found her.
How could he have known exactly where she was staying? Even though I could feel my blood boil as the anger I was feeling started to rise, I didn’t stop to think. I rushed over and placed my arms around her to try to calm her down. As soon as I embraced her, she started to struggle and if I hadn’t known better, I would have said she was trying to scream, but nothing came from her mouth. I could feel her starting to panic and hyperventilate. I needed to calm her down and soon. Calmly, I spoke to her.
“Shhh, Bonita. It’s me. You’re safe. Calm down, please.”
I felt her start to relax a little as I rubbed her back and held her in my arms.
“It’s okay, I’m here. Nothing is going to happen to you.”
I lifted her up in my arms and carried her into the front room. I knew I needed a shower, but right now, she was my main priority, and I needed to make her feel safe. I sat down with her on the corner sofa. I laid her down next to me and just held her as she sobbed. At least her breathing was now more controlled, but I still needed her to calm down further.
“Bonita, I need you to take deep breaths for me.”
I took her hand and placed it over my heart and did the same to her, mainly so I could feel if her heart had stopped racing like it must have been.
“Follow my breathing. In slowly…and out. In…and out.”
I could feel her following my lead and copying my breathing pattern. Her heart was starting to slow, and although the tears were still falling, she was no longer weeping. I felt her rest her head on my chest as I pulled her into my side.
“How are you doing, Bonita?”
I felt her snuggle close into me and heard her sigh.
“I’m sorry, I know I overreacted. I just panicked when I saw the note.”
“What did the note say?”
I hadn’t looked for a note when I had picked her up. In fact, I hadn’t seen it at all. She lifted her arm and opened her hand, revealing the crumpled piece of paper concealed in it. I started to read and could see why Abigail had completely flipped out. I was glad that Mateus would be arriving today, as I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep her safe by myself. The fact that whoever was doing this had found out my address from someone, or had followed us here, was unsettling.
“It’s okay, Bonita. I’m here now, and I’m not going to leave you alone again. Mateus will be here soon and will be able to help protect you. Please try not to worry.”
I felt her relax in my arms as I gently rubbed up and down her back. It was the wrong time to be feeling this, but she felt so right here. I wanted to comfort her – needed it, almost. The more time I spent with her, the more I regarded her as my Bonita, the woman I had fallen in love with. The woman who had destroyed all of my walls to open up my heart. But I knew she could never love me. That she didn’t love me. I was just the guy that was keeping her safe from harm. I heard her breathing slow and realised that she had fallen asleep in my arms. I should have been moving her, putting her into her bed, but part of me just wanted to lie here with her in my arms. To enjoy it for as long as I could. I decided that was exactly what I was going to do. I took out my phone and sent a quick text to Mateus, to let him know just to let himself into the house when he arrived and that he could find me in the sitting room. I sent him all the codes to get in and then relaxed with Abigail in my arms, relishing the feeling of her body next to mine.
It was nearly eleven o’clock when I heard the front door open. I knew it would be Mateus, as no one else knew how to get into the building without a key. Abigail was still asleep in my arms and had not stirred for the past hour I had been lying here with her. All that time, I was just lying there thinking how good it would feel to be able to have this forever, but also how I knew it would never be. As Mateus walked into the room and a smile formed on his face, I knew he was not going to let this go. Hell, if the tables were turned and it was either him or one of my friends I had walked in on and saw this, I knew I would have been giving them a good grilling on what was going on between them.
“Ricardo. Sorry, Kye. You will have to forgive me. You are still my little brother, Ricardo, so I may forget sometimes.”
“Mateus, good to see you. Thank you for coming to help.”
He took a seat in front of me and just shook his head. I could guess the next thing that he was going to say, but to my surprise, he didn’t.
“I take it something has happened this morning, then? I saw the bouquet of flowers on the kitchen island. Were they delivered here?”
I nodded. “Yes, along with this note.”
Mateus, leaned forward to take the note from my hand. I saw his face drop as he read the words. He had taken it as seriously as I had.
“How did Abigail take it? Not well, I assume, as she is currently asleep in your arms.”
I looked down at her as she lay there in my arms. I didn’t want to see her as fragile and broken, but lying here right now, that was how she appeared. I looked up at Mateus, who was shaking his head again.
“Of course she took it bad. I walked in to find her collapsed on the floor. When I tried to comfort her, she went hysterical, thinking it was her stalker coming to get her.”
