Chapter Thirteen

Abigail

Ihad lain in my bed for a while with the door slightly open, listening to Kye finish the song. I had to admit a few tears rolled down my face as I heard the notes he was playing. It was as though he was baring his soul for everyone to see. That he had finally opened part of himself that had been hidden for so many years. I had so much wanted to go in and sit with him as he played. I had listened to that song so many times over the years, but it had never sounded as beautiful as it did last night. It was as though some celestial being was guiding the sound of the music being played.

I wasn’t sure if I should tell Kye this morning that I had seen him playing the piano. He hadn’t looked around all the time he was playing, so I was sure he thought he was alone. Perhaps I needed to keep it that way. If he knew that I had heard him play, he might have felt as though it was an intrusion into his privacy, and that was the last thing I wanted him to feel. It was one reason why I hadn’t stayed long, even though I wanted to.

I still wanted to know what was eating him up inside. He had seemed so worried about being here, and I wasn’t sure if that was because of his family as a whole, or just the fact that his brother was coming. I had tried to make him understand that it was obvious his brother loved him and would do anything for him. The mere fact that he had dropped everything to be here in two days told me how much he cared for Kye. He just needed to realise that family would always forgive, and whatever was causing his own pain, he needed to forgive himself.

I looked over at my phone and saw that it was nearly eight o’clock. I wasn’t sure what time Mateus was going to turn up, so I decided that it was probably best if I got ready for the day. I grabbed a quick shower, got dressed, and headed downstairs to see Kye. When I walked into the kitchen, I found that Kye was nowhere to be found. I walked over to the island and found a note saying that he had gone for a run and would be back to start breakfast soon. I was taken back to the morning I had cooked him an authentic Portuguese breakfast – well, as authentic as I could make it – and I wanted to do it for him again. I looked around the kitchen and found everything I needed. This time, however, I would be able to make it with true Madeiran Bolo do Caco, as I had already noticed that Kye had made sure we had some in the house, but as yet had not used it.

I started to get everything ready so I could just start to cook when Kye arrived back, the same as I had before. I got everything all laid out, made myself a coffee, and sat down at the island in the middle of the kitchen to await Kye’s arrival. I was looking forward to meeting Mateus, if for only the reason that I might actually get some answers to the questions that Kye wouldn’t answer. Well, I say wouldn’t; he answered them, but I had a strong suspicion that there was more to it than the answers he was giving. I hoped that by finally meeting Mateus, either he would answer them, or it would bring Kye out of his shell and get him to open up.

As I sat there waiting for Kye to come back, a message came through on my phone. Opening it up, I expected to see it was from my sister, or perhaps Jo or Bianca. But I was shocked to see it was from Kelsey.

Hi Abigail.

Just thought I would check all was okay.

Kels.

I decided to give her a call instead of a text exchange, so I dialled her number. She answered almost immediately.

“Hi, Abigail. How is Madeira?”

“It’s amazing, Kelsey. You and Nathan should really come out here. I could see myself retiring here. The island is beautiful. I’m going to try to convince Kye to take me out and see more of it tomorrow, as we have a day off.”

“I had never thought about going to Madeira if I’m honest, even after Kye told us he used to live there. I guess I need to have a chat with Kye and perhaps ask him if we can stay at his place?”

“I’m sure he wouldn’t mind. It’s a lovely place, and you don’t have to go too far to get to the beach. It is only a two-minute walk, if that.”

“I will speak to Kye when he gets back. Talking of Kye, is he there?”

“No, he is out for his morning run. I was just waiting for him to come back, and then I was going to make him breakfast.”

“He’s meant to be looking after you, not the other way around.”

“He is. This will be the first time I have cooked since we came here, and I only got to cook at his place twice. I just wish…”

I stopped myself before I said any more. I knew that Kelsey and Nathan were good friends of Kye, and I suspected they were very protective of him. I didn’t want to say anything to upset them, especially Kelsey, as she had been so kind to me on that day when I went to see Jayden.

“Just wish what? That Kye would open up to you?”

I was shocked that Kelsey knew exactly what I was thinking.

“Yes.”

I heard her breathe a deep sigh before she continued to speak.

“Just give him time, Abigail. I’m sure he likes you. That much was clear at Jayden and Sienna’s wedding. I’m not going to explain because it isn’t my story to tell. Just be patient with him and be ready to fight if you really like him. Don’t let him push you away, because he will.”

“I wish I could get close enough for him to even try pushing me away. He sends out so many mixed messages. One moment, he is all business and subdued, then the next he is holding my hand or pulling me into his side as we sit and watch the waves crashing onto the beach. I never know which Kye is there. When I try to get him to open up about things, he gives me little to no information. I just don’t think he is ready for a relationship. Or it’s me?”

I heard a slight laugh down the phone.

“That’s Kye. He is ready for a relationship, and he definitely would be with you. He just doesn’t realise it yet. Just be patient with him.”

“I’ll try, Kels. Thanks for telling me I’m not wasting my time.”
