“You can just stop right there. All Chrissy and Lucas know is I have a weird stalker sending me letters and gifts, and I have employed you as my personal guard. You can tell them as much or as little about your past as you want. But whatever you do say, they will not judge you. They will treat you like a friend. Now get that sorry arse out of the truck and help me down like the gentleman I know you can be.”

I looked into his eyes and saw a smirk started to appear on his face. My Kye was back, and when he spoke, I knew that was the case.

“Whatever you say, Bonita. Just remember, though, I’m only a gentleman outside of the bedroom.”

Before I could say a word about his sexual innuendo, he was out of the truck and round to my side. Taking my hand, he assisted me out of the truck and we walked up to meet Chrissy and Lucas. All the while, I could feel Kye’s hand on my back, guiding me along. I was sure it would leave a scorch mark, the heat that was radiating off of him. I didn’t even make it to the door before I was engulfed in Chrissy’s arms. She eventually let me go and turned to Kye, as Lucas gave me a quick hug for good measure.

“You must be Kye? Thank you for coming today, and thank you for taking care of my big sister. I know she can be a pain in the arse, but you get used to her after a while.”

“Chrissy!”

She may be my little sister, but I wasn’t going to let her get away with that. Not after bringing her up for two years after Mum and Dad died. Kye held out his hand to great Chrissy.

“I can handle Bonita. It’s lovely to meet you, Christine. You too, Lucas. Thank you for allowing me to gate-crash your family time with Abigail.”

I saw Chrissy raise her eyebrows at me when Kye referred to me as Bonita. Lucas just smiled. I knew he spoke some Portuguese – he had to in his line of work as an account manager for a big multinational bank in the city – so I suspected he knew exactly what Kye was saying. But I wouldn’t ask him.

“Please don’t think you are gate-crashing. You are welcome here anytime, Kye. And please call me Chrissy. I hardly go by Christine anymore. Let’s get inside. We’re making the neighbourhood look untidy, standing out here.”

We all went inside the house, and I followed Chrissy into the kitchen, while Lucas and Kye went off to the living room with a beer.

“You never told me how gorgeous your bodyguard was. I hope you are taking him into the bedroom, as well as to every photoshoot and event.”

“Chrissy.”

I got up from my chair at the island where I was sitting and closed the kitchen door. My sister only had one volume, and I didn’t want Kye to hear what we were discussing and get the wrong idea.

“What, Abi? Don’t tell me you haven’t seen how gorgeous he is.”

“Yes, I have seen how gorgeous he is. Yes, I fancy the pants off of him. But he is a very private guy. Something happened to him in the past, and he won’t open up to me about it. I’m taking things slowly, but I hope to break down his walls. If you say a word to him, I’ll…”

“I won’t say a word. Hopefully, Lucas will be able to get him to relax a little. Anyway, what’s with the Bonita thing?”

“I don’t really know. He started calling me it the other day. I guess it’s Portuguese, as he is from Madeira. I haven’t wanted to look it up. He will tell me when he’s ready, I’m sure. And before you say a word, yes, I know Lucas speaks Portuguese, but I don’t want to know. So don’t make him tell me.”

We sat and chatted for a while, drinking coffee and just catching up. I had missed this time with my sister. Usually, it would be with Lucas as well, but I had a sneaky suspicion that he wanted to find out more about my bodyguard to put both his and my sister’s minds at rest.
